Choosing the right hoover?

I'm looking for a new vacuum cleaner, but not sure what to look out for on the specification?

I see there is "Watts" & "Air Watts". Is this all I need to be looking out for? I take it, the higher the Watts the better?

Which "Watts" is more important?

Don't get a Vax, they're crap. Morphy Richards aren't much better.

I posted a similar thread a few months ago, I went for one with both high watts and air watts and am very happy with it, it beats my dyson hands down, the link is in the thread

If I recall correctly, Which doesn't recommend Dyson because although their hoovering performance is good, their repair / reliability performance is not good.

Miele or Henrys are supposed to be good and pretty indestructible.

I think I've had every hoover on the market. I hated the dyson, the stupid thing didn't have great suction and it was clumsy to get from upright to hoovering position. I also had a henry, it was good but after a few months it developed a smell which I couldn't get rid of, it smelt like old parmesan cheese, I tried everything, bleached the tubing, changed the filter, put in freshner thingies, nothing helped, so that is now in the garage and used as a car hoover.

I have a miele cat and dog, it's pretty good, I've decided I like a bag, I am totally over the bag less cloud of cat hair and dust every time I want to empty the tank.

Having said that, I've recently added a GTECH AirRam to my collection and I love it. Not great for the stairs but for the rest of the house it's a dream.

I've got a Vax Air Mach (I think), the performance is fantastic usually. Last few weeks it's been struggling so as I was at a loose end today I took the thing to pieces and found loads of hair(!) in the cyclone part - I was amazed it got any suction at all considering how much there was.

Not tried it yet, but I can see people thinking there machine is broken as cleaning the cyclone elements isn't in the maintenance guides. Just 4 small screws holding it together.

My only real issue with the Vax is the pipe from the hose to the cylinder wraps round the underside of the unit, and it's hard plastic - the OH is indiscriminate with vacuuming so I've had to disassemble that a few times to pull out pens and hairclips. Very hard to get access as you can't straighten the pipe so I'm there for 10 minutes with my biggest screwdriver just trying to loosen the offending articles.
