Ok, so I tried calling my Dad - no answer. I then sent another email, kept it a bit lighter, put some info in about what I'd been doing this week, general chit chat etc. Then I said:

Would you be able to call or email me about the flights? This seems unnecessary. I could see if I could change the flights, find another solution, you could come over and visit me at the flat. It just needs a bit of communication and willingness to find a solution.

He's replied saying his phone was downstairs and he was up, not sure if I believe that, but never mind. He's said he doesn't think the flights can be changed now and he would have liked further negotiation with him before booking. He's said that he can't visit me this year as he's too busy with work (always the same *rolls eyes*). Presumably he thinks I work in some sort of turn up when you like job...but anyhow he has replied and the lines of communication have been opened again.

I'm going to call up to see if I can change my flights slightly, see if I can get a bit more time out there by jiggling things around a bit and make them economy if possible. I don't think I'll be able to spend the time with him he'd like, but then he's booked to go on holiday himself from the 27th. It will be the best I can do.

It's probably only a matter of time before something else like this crops up again, but I feel proud of myself for the way I've dealt with it. I'm improving my negotiation skills if nothing else! I'm also going to look into counselling to help me with difficult family relationships longer term.
