Psychic Visit

Yep, she's still at it.
Another quote that is quite fitting for her but without the classical literature origin is from Vinnie Jones in Snatch - "You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity."
She has a website. You can join it for $49.95 for one year, or alternatively, you can spend the pound sterling equivalent on ouija boards, dreamcatchers and dowsing paraphernalia and be about as effective a psychic as she is.0 -

I'm not a believer myself, but a friend of mine who is having a few personal issues with relationships is going to see a psychic this evening and has asked me to accompany her.
I feel such nonsense can be dangerous but I want to keep an open mind - has anyone had a positive experience with a psychic read?
It would be interesting to read what he/she (and the friend) thought about the experience.0 -

I'll do it for free. Hang about... I see... tomorrow... will be named... "Mon Day".... OOOOOOH :cool:0 -
To put my friend at ease I took a read too, it's difficult to ascertain how accurate it was as it was mainly predictions for the future.
She did seem to get a few things spot on, could have been lucky guesses. I spoke to a number of random people on FB who had reads with her and a lot of what she said came to pass.
Overall I'm not sure but something I didn't state in my original post is I have an acquaintance who is or at least claims to psychic. She is adamant that no money should ever change hands and that psychic abilities are for helping people only.
She gave me about 10 quite odd predictions relating to future events for me, they all seemed highly unlikely but 9 have came to pass.
I still don't think I'm a believer especially when money changes hands.0 -
This would be the elderly lady "psychic" who was part of a "church/chapel"?
Speculating to accumulate. The "psychic" hands out free readings in order to indoctrinate vulnerable, susceptible people into joining their church. In doing so, the church, which is usually a borderline cult, will reap greater financial rewards over the long-term instead of simple short-term gain.
It doesn't work in all cases as some people never return to the church but others are swayed, question their own beliefs and return to the church for a service eventually becoming one of the "flock", subsequently being encouraged over time to donate small bits of money or items to collection, upkeep, jumble sales etc.
Churches that engage in this rather insidious practice usually associate themselves with spiritualism, although not always.
The "psychic" will rarely encourage the individual to join the church, or even recommend attending a service as this would be a rather obvious ploy. Instead, through standard linguistic trickery, the psychic simply attempts to plant a seed.
Honestly, she had nothing to do with the religious organisation before she went for the reading, and she never went back as the lady adamantly told her " do not come back as i will not read for you again, just get on with your life".2013

Of course, it would be a waste of time trying to indoctrinate somebody who was already indoctrinated.
The goal is usually to recruit people to start attending the church. Telling her that she would not do anymore readings for her is not telling her not to attend the church. The aim is to plant a seed and hope it flowers. Sometimes it does, sometimes it does not.0 -

Honestly, you've struck me as a believer from the outset.0 -

But it was "don't think" and "not sure" a moment ago, and now it is definitely?
For someone who claims to "definitely" not believe, you've actually gone quite some way towards entertaining the notion from the outset. The majority of people who dismiss this quackery wouldn't even entertain the notion of allowing a friend expose themselves to a confidence trickster, let alone decide to have a reading.
In fact, for someone who claims to "definitely" not believe, you've done a lot more to suggest that there is something to it, particularly with your recent post mentioning your psychic friend and the nine out of ten spot on predictions (love the turn of phrase "came to pass", very mystic) that have all come true in just a few days.
Add to that the desire to keep an open mind, the knowledge of how this particular psychic operates and the earlier attempted dismissal of arguments based on "have you had a reading?". Something doesn't quite add up with "definitely" not being a believer.0 -
Firstly, I have no doubt there are numerous fraudsters out there. No doubt about that.
However, I do keep an open mind, just because we are living in the year 2013 does not mean science and knowledge and understanding are the be all and end all. There are things out there that we, for various reasons, cannot comprehend. No doubt about that either.
So saying that because it cannot be proven to be real today it doesn't exist is just wrong.
The attitudes displayed to those who do believe are I imagine the names thrown against those for example who said the earth was round and not flat as taught- something which they were correct about but at the time could not be proved.
I had a palm reading years ago (paid for) which couldn't have been more wrong as things turned out. Horse manure doesn't cover it.
I also had another reading recently (free), and after discounting everything that could have been found out about digitally, was frankly scarily accurate. The psychic was not known to me, not local, and I monitored carefully what she was told beforehand purely because I wanted to see how much she came up with on her own (barring internet trails etc which I am as meticulous as I can be about anyway).
I'm not so narrow minded (or arrogant) as to call the whole thing a fake because it cannot be proved but I would say it's very likely the majority are fraudsters.
I describe myself as having an open mind, but with a large dose of scepticism thrown in.0
