I had a chance encounter with a psychic in Sydney Australia in 1993. I am still amazed today at how accurate she was, not only in what would happen in the future but also what I had been thinking only a couple of hours earlier (insignificant thoughts).

If psychics exist, why hasn't Doris Stokes been in touch from the other side? I realise I'm showing my age here :)

Or was she a medium? not sure I believe in their abilities either.

I saw an old clip of hers a while back, she was so bad it was almost funny.

She was trying to 'bring comfort' to parents of a teenage boy that had died and she assured them he was happy and played his guitar all the time . Unfortunately the parents were rather surprised as he had never owned a guitar in life, but the great Doris hastily assured them that he had learnt after he died !

I understand that she had seen a guitar in the house before the reading and assumed it belonged to the son .

Read the cold reading scenario here by Doris......it explains why people believe she told them things when they in fact told her first

I have seen a medium and she was able to name family members and was actually doing different mannerisms that they would have done to me, and said some very accurate things, she wasn't at all local to me, I'm from ireland, and I seen her in scotland.

The contracts that are agreed upon when someone presents themselves for scrutiny say otherwise. Randi does not even hold the money himself, instead it is held by a third party investment company waiting to be claimed.

Had anyone proven themselves and Randi had somehow blocked payment that in itself would be a huge story.

There are also plenty of other standing offers for evidence that have gone unclaimed. Randi's is the most notable hence his name is brought up more often but there's quite a number of other challenges, from all sorts of groups and individuals, with clear and concise rules and contracts and still... nothing.

Nonetheless, regardless of how you feel about Randi it does not negate any of the points I made later on.

I didn't say he HADNT put up a million - I just say he will never pay out. he is the sole arbiter of whether it gets paid or not.

But the point is he has presented the contracts that are signed by both those taking the challenge and himself, as well as those who are independently brought in for assessment and it has been proven contractually binding by lawyers.

If someone met his criteria and he refused to pay out, the resulting legal challenges and negative publicity would cost him more than $1m.

The argument you could make is that his criteria is unfair and some people have argued that in the past, and that may be a legitimate concern, but there are still thousands who have taken the tests knowing what is being asked of them and have failed.

You know I am not a fan of most psychics - I agree there are a lot of charlatans out there!
but I am really fed up of people using the name 'James Randi' to 'Prove' all Pyschics/mediums/Ghosts are fake. The James Randi Foundation is solely administered by ...........oh guess who? James Randi - and no matter how good the evidence he is NEVER going to pay someone £1million.
The fact that Randi wont pay out does not in any way prove anything is fake. I could take out an ad and offer a million quid to anyone who could prove psychics are real - and then not pay out. anyone can. to me, James Randi is just as much a con artist as those he claims to despise - he has bought himself a LOT of publicity and public attention by NOT paying out a 'dime'. what a scam!

A group of women where I used to work used to go to this woman occasionally.

I was openly sceptical but agreed to go one time.

She chatted to me before starting, I was tanned (in March back in the days when winter sun holidays weren't so common) and I told her I'd just come back from the Far East (which also wasn't common 25 years ago) and I had a pretty decent sized diamond on my hand with a shiny new wedding ring. ;)

She proceeded to tell me a load of predicable guff about how I'd travel far & wide and I'd not struggle for money (actually she was right but presented with the evidence in front of her, it wasn't that hard to 'predict'.

She spoke of someone with the letter 'R' who was 'important in my life'.
    No, nobody.
    'The letter 'A'.
    No, nobody.

She got on the subject of children (not many mid 30 couples getting together for a 2nd marriage don't have children on one side or both) and I told her there were none.
She said 'There will be', I replied 'I can tell you categorically there won't'.
She then told me I'd been pregnant & lost a baby.
    I told her 'no' (truthfully).

In the end, I told her that she was just playing percentages and, unfortunately for her, she'd just come up against someone who was pretty atypical in most areas.

I paid her (she demurred, I insisted) and went back to my friends and said she was a faker.
They mulled over what she'd said to me and what she'd said to them and never went back.

    Hi All,

I'm not a believer myself, but a friend of mine who is having a few personal issues with relationships is going to see a psychic this evening and has asked me to accompany her.

I feel such nonsense can be dangerous but I want to keep an open mind - has anyone had a positive experience with a psychic read?

Encouraging such mumbo-jumbo nonsense does not equal keeping an open mind. IME, the people who believe in all this wacky crap are precisely the ones who can't actually think very well.
