True or not ( and I am a sceptic) it did give comfort to someone I know. She lost her young daughter years ago now, but just after it happened someone suggested she see this elderly lady, part of a church/chapel.
No payment was asked for and at the end money was offered but refused.
She also told her not to come back for another reading.

    Edited for you;)

I'm immensly cheered by recent posts (ie the cynical ones, for clarity) on this thread.

There's a 'famous' medium lives round the corner from me. She has, apparently 'helped' the rich and famous. Her story has been written by a former headteacher who has now left education to pursue her metaphysical dreams and pathways.

    Well!

Thank (*(&^*&%*&%) (insert expletive of choice) the apparently well-educated primary headteacher has now LEFT education.

and if E. P. is such a fantastic medium how come she's living in a little house in a Midlands town with convicted criminals as members of her close family?

    And famous?

    can YOU name her?

Not the one who 'advised' Glen Hoddle, who said that disabled people deserved it fom past lives?

I seem to remember she was an Eileen or something beginning with E.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

I'm SO glad that it's not only me who is a total skeptic :j

These people are vultures, swooping in and feeding from peoples grief

Thanks RuthnJasper for mentioning the excellent Robert Lancaster site StopSylvia-it just shows what bunkum this whole thing is. I'm a member of the James Randi Education Foundation, and it's astounding how the supporters of this 'woo' violently defend the likes of John Edward etc. Even when they are PROVEN wrong, they refuse to believe it and come up with all sorts of excuses.

This is the Psychic/paranormal forum http://forums.randi.org/forumdisplay.php?f=7 you don't have to be a member, and it makes for interesting reading.

Iused it when my friends husband died a few months back at a relatively young age and she wanted to visit a psychic. I persuaded her otherwise.

Some people say ''what's the harm-it gives them comfort' Balls! It parts them with their money-that's all, you might as well flush 20-40 quid down the toilet. Trouble is also-these parasites will try to convince you to keep coming back. Bottom Feeders-that's all.

    Aaaaaahh, and breaathhheeee:)
Ruaridh Armstrong-missing since 05/11/11. Come home old boy-we miss you x

If you can't stand behind our troops, please feel free to stand in front of them.

I will respect your opinions, even if I don't agree with them :)

The incident I told in my post above, no money changed hands, no money was asked for and it did give comfort.

Thanks Saz. I'm in the JREF also, one of the sanest places on the internet! ;)

I also remember that, AGES ago (sometime between 2002 - 2005, if memory serves), Randi had a massive rant which garnered lots of support about the parasites who were selling fake 'bomb detectors' and making millions from (mostly third-world) militaries and others. It went quiet for a bit, and now - lo and behold - James McCormick is jailed for 10 years for precisely that, having made millions from his useless box o' tricks and killed and maimed countless numbers of people who placed their trust in him.

And for those who say the psychics give help to the bereaved - maybe they DO provide "comfort" to the grieving. But don't forget that they are also passing on "messages" and "information" about the dead that have no way of being proved. It's better to take comfort in the memories of the life and love of the person who has passed away, which DID take place, rather than have their memory tainted by spurious "messages" from "beyond". Cherish the memory, instead of seeking further interaction, and let the dead rest in peace.

There's a difference between sensible open-mindedness, and having it so open all your brains fall out.
Or so open that anybody can chuck rubbish into it.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

This would be the elderly lady "psychic" who was part of a "church/chapel"?

Speculating to accumulate. The "psychic" hands out free readings in order to indoctrinate vulnerable, susceptible people into joining their church. In doing so, the church, which is usually a borderline cult, will reap greater financial rewards over the long-term instead of simple short-term gain.

It doesn't work in all cases as some people never return to the church but others are swayed, question their own beliefs and return to the church for a service eventually becoming one of the "flock", subsequently being encouraged over time to donate small bits of money or items to collection, upkeep, jumble sales etc.

Churches that engage in this rather insidious practice usually associate themselves with spiritualism, although not always.

The "psychic" will rarely encourage the individual to join the church, or even recommend attending a service as this would be a rather obvious ploy. Instead, through standard linguistic trickery, the psychic simply attempts to plant a seed.

Sylvia Browne (her again) once went on Larry King Live and agreed to take the test, but subsequently trotted out a variety of excuses why she wouldn't do it. Mind you, she also appeared on Larry King on 4 September 2001 and failed to predict the devastating and heinous tragedy which was to occur just seven days later...

Sylvia Browne did correctly predict Obama would be re-elected while she was a guest on some inane chat show. You have to give her credit for guessing correctly on a 50/50 shot...

Or you would, had she not "predicted" on another talk show a few hours earlier that Obama would not get re-elected. :D

It says something when your prediction is effectively a flip of a coin and you can't even commit to which side it lands on! :rotfl:

Oh no, is she STILL out there spouting her bile?! After the Sago mining and Shawn Hornbeck things I'd never have dared to show my face in public again. But (to paraphrase Jane Austen) "one should never underestimate the impudence of an impudent person"... ;)
