Cheese wedding cakes are the best idea ever - we're hoping to have one for our evening buffet, depending how our attempt to haggle the caterers down goes. But then OH and I both come from families who love cheese so it was getting in there somewhere!

Blue and silver is a good call for colours - wintry, but not too festive. I'm still considering mine; originally I wanted red, white and black but now not sure if it'll look too much like a funeral, so am now thinking of swapping black for blue and maybe doing a very loose 'Best of British' theme, but I want to run it by a few people first. And there's ages to go yet for decisions like that, although I'm fully aware one day I'll say that and there won't be!

I haven't made any progress I'm afraid - my mum's been away so everything's on hold a bit until I can have the talk with her about budgets and then I'll sort the wedding insurance.

Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")

I've also just put in an enquiry with a photographer I've found on Twitter - her pictures are really nice and she's very reasonable, plus it doesn't hurt to ask!

I went to a winter wedding years ago that had red, white and black as a theme, and I thought it looked lovely, not too funereal! The bride had 4 bridesmaids, two in black and two in red. Her dress had a red bodice and a full white skirt. I thought the scheme worked really well. Having said that, 'best of British' sounds fab, and I bet it would be really easy to come up with ideas for favours and things. I know what you mean about having plenty of time, I'm trying not to get too set on certain ideas or colours etc, because I may well change my mind over the next 16 months or so!

    Hi everyone!

A little update from me and a goodbye of sorts...

We had a look at the two venues we were considering on a very sunny, beautiful day last week. Well, to my surprise, I really liked my fianc!'s favourite choice - a lot more than I thought I would! The photos we saw just didn't do it justice. My initial favourite was also gorgeous and I know we would've had a great day there too but it felt a bit formal. What really impressed me about our chosen venue was that the ceremony took place on one floor and the wedding breakfast on another. After the wedding breakfast guests then returned to the top floor for the evening celebration. I really liked that there were two distinct spaces and the grounds were very pretty. If the weather is fine we will be able to have our drinks reception outside.

We decided that the venue was best suited to summer weddings so we had a think and decided to book it for September next year! All of the Saturdays between April and mid-September were booked; I think we have the last Saturday of summer! We decided to book in September because even though we have to pay the peak rate it was still £400 cheaper than the other venue would have been in November.

We're really excited! We've reserved the date and the venue are sending us the paperwork today! I've found the photographer and been in touch with the registrar (2.30 pm ceremony - hopefully!) and caterers so once the contract and invoice for hire arrives tomorrow, we'll be good to go!

Hi Lettice, glad you got your venue and date sorted, although sorry to hear you're leaving the thread!!! I'll be keeping an eye on the September 2014 thread to see how you're getting on :j

I haven't made any progress with planning; I have a family member's wedding in a few weeks and I am part of the bridal party, so all attention is on that at the moment and mine is on the backburner! Really need to get some insurance sorted soon though, will try and get onto that this week...

How are you getting on minerva_windsong?
  • Glad you got your venue sorted lettice, we'll miss you over here though! Will also be keeping an eye on the September thread too :)

Not made much progress either I'm afraid, beyond pulling together ideas from a couple of wedding magazines, mainly because I still haven't had the money conversation! I know I could (and should, and probably will) sort out the insurance soon but am a bit reluctant to do it in case I either overpay or don't have enough cover. I'm also in full-on job-hunting mode so that's been taking up a lot of my time lately as well. However now it's a bit more relaxed I'm going to start pulling together my spreadsheets properly so I can see what needs doing when.

I also decided against the photographer I found - she was lovely and quite cheap but I wasn't 100 per cent convinced about the quality of the pictures, so I thought better to say thanks but no thanks rather than get someone whose pictures weren't exactly what I wanted. And there's plenty of time to pick out a photographer yet!

Me me me! *waves hand* I'm 1st November 2014 :)

    When's your date lettice?

ME TOO!!! 1st November 2014 :rotfl:

    Hello everyone!
We are getting married in Gloucestershire at a hotel set in a really rustic mill! Only got as far as asking my Mum to make cake, sorting insurance and photographer so far, as we have been moving house, but I have 6 weeks off school so now having fun gorging myself on wedmin!!!!!
@Bean83: We went via Quidco to Debenhams Wedding Insurance as they had agood deal, plus sent us 5 pound voucher also got 15 pounds cashback!!!!!!!! So we covered ourselves for a bit more just in case, but still paid less than what we would have elsewhere.

We want an arctic theme as we got engaged whilst in Svalbard dog sledding!!! So thinking penguin/polar bear etc themed tables hehe!!!!

An arctic theme sounds ace! I've been to a couple of weddings with similar themes and it's worked really well - one that sticks in my head was one at the hotel I used to work in, where they had mainly white decorations/flowers etc with bits of dark blue and silver, and different Inuit words for snow as the table names. I thought that was awesome.

    Hi ellesbelles *waves*

Looks like we'll be colour scheme twins, as I'm probably going for blue/silver too! An arctic theme sounds fab, you should have these for your cakes http://staceyssweetshop.blogspot.co.uk/2010/03/penguin-mini-cake-and-cupcakes-with.html :rotfl:
