The size of a car's exhaust is in inverse proportion to the size of the owner's brain. (There are alternative versions of this.)

I have a 3.5 inch exhaust on my (standard) evo.
I am conscious that it is noisy, especially in built up areas (last measured at 95db). But the noise is absolutely gorgeous.
Not everyone that drives a performance car is a) male, b) a chav, c) a crap driver you know!:A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:AThinks Naughty Things Too Much Clique Member No 3, 4 & 5

Why not make a recording of it and play it on a very loud stereo inside a quiet car then? I'm sure not everybody thinks it's gorgeous.0 -

Don't come and live here then - you wouldn't appreciate the throb of hot Lambo or Ferrari all day!
I don't particularly appreciate the sound of screaming children, dogs barking, police sirens or car alarms going off, but I don't see anyone suggesting cures for that!:A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:AThinks Naughty Things Too Much Clique Member No 3, 4 & 5

I think a noise on a car can be nice, but doing your best to make it as loud as possible is just stupid. A performance car shouldn't be making 95db at idle, and the fact you know this suggests to me you have tried your best to make it as noisy as possible (hence the Db meter). Either you have thrashed the engine to death repeatedly redlining it again and again causing damage to engine parts, the car is very poorly maintained, or you have made some needless stupid modifications to increase the noise. Either way both show you're antisocial. Why not just have a nice car rather than a noisy one?! I could be a !!!! and make my 1.3 skoda favorit noisy. It has surprising performance for a 1.3 - but what would I get out of it other than annoying other people?! I like to think my car's 2 standard silencers along the exhaust are there for a purpose.0

where did i say 95db at idle????
it's 95db at 4,500 revs (measured prior to a trackday, which is the only time I realise the full performance of my car). it's a lot quieter when idling in my driveway, but still louder than a noisier car. i also put a silencer in the exhaust when it's being driven on normal roads.
car is not modded at all, and is extremely well maintained. and as far as i'm concerned, it is a nice car. not many skoda 1.3s are 340bhp!!!!
point is, i'm aware of the noise made by my car, and i even turn the stereo off before driving into my estate so as not to disturb others.
doesn't seem to stop them letting their dogs bark and kids scream whenever and wherever they feel like it though :A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:AThinks Naughty Things Too Much Clique Member No 3, 4 & 5

Then your car is illegal IMO. Except to say that if you do silence it on the highway compared to your track days then it may be ok.0 -

It's completely road legal, thanks.
(Just checked - 53 dB at idle, 80 dB when cruising at 70mph):A MSE's turbo-charged CurlyWurlyGirly:AThinks Naughty Things Too Much Clique Member No 3, 4 & 5

Does it say that in the handbook? I'm glad to hear it. This is something I think should be included in the MOT tests.0 -
