Question for all u lovely stitchers...

Does everyone start their stitching from the middle of the chart? I've done two pieces so far and I start from left hand side and work across. Is it a personal thing to start from the centre or is that the proper way it's meant to be?

If I've got gridded fabric, or if I'm using the magic guide Aida I'll start wherever makes most sense - because I *know* I've got enough fabric for the whole design.

If I'm on blank fabric, I tend to mark the centre and start from there.

(I don't always like rules, it's nice to bend them :rotfl:)

Folding the material horizontally and then vertically finds the exact centre of the piece you are working on. Then starting with the centre stitches ensures that everything is centred on the material.

Its the way I learned to do it when I first started cross stitching but I am sure there are lots of different ways to achieve great results.

    welcome to the cafe FabB
starting from the middle ensures that your piece is centred properly on the fabric i think thats why most of us start there.
of course counting means you can start at the edge so i suppose its down to personal choice

Thanks. I thought it was centred so the piece finishes neat and doesn't get stretched to one side (as you stitch outwards the fabric wouldn't get pulled in one direction). Dunno if that makes sense. Both pieces were kits so I had no worry about running out of fabric. Startng from the centre confuses me so I'll stick to left to right.

I always start from the centre. I have heard of people running out of fabric when there has been a mistake with the kit :eek:so I would always double check and grid the fabric to be on the safe side.

Yeah I suppose I should check first. It would be so frustrating to end up running out of fabric. I've read 'grid' before in cross stitching but what is it? Is it actually marking the fabric where the pattern will lie?

I'm another one for starting in the centre, but I don't usually grid the fabric.

I am still working on the border - the first part came out in three pages - only done the first page. The border is done in satin stitch

I only do work on the learning sampler at weekends and do the work on the seasons samplers during the week.

The designer has released the next part - which contains smyrna cross stitch, rice stitch and upright cross stitch.

Feeling quite tired - so will check on in FB then might do a wee bit of stitching to relax before bed.

    Kind wishes to all

    sweetcarer ;)

Each time you mention a different stitch sweetcarer I have been looking it up to see how it's done (not that I will be able to remember). Your work is so neat btw.
