Mrs VP I am a great fan of the cauli rice but do find you need to have something saucy. How did u do yours? I just put mine in food processor then cover with cling film and micro for a few mins til hot.
If you are cutting down on carbs then polenta is lovely you can buy it in block form which can be cooked every way and holds its shape and can be used as a sweet dish as well. The loose stuff makes a nice "mash" but needs a flavouring as its a bit bland. Parsnip mash is also a great "mash" substitute or sweet potato noodles are lovely as well I got mine from the Chinese supermarket. Apologies if you know all this xx
  • Hi Softstuff, I made the cauli rice by steaming then chopping. It all broke down into grains. It was really nice.

Oooh no food processor?? Wow, if that's the case I'm likely to try it next fast day.

They keep advertising these things that turn carrots and courgettes into spaghetti here, which would also be delightful on a fast day (and I notice they're only a couple of dollars on ebay), but even on the ad, they don't seem to work right. Has anyone tried one?

    Good morning all

thanks Softstuff and Mrs VP :). I do feel a little bit better today. I managed to get to bed before 11pm after a little read and tonight I will aim for 10.30pm. I am having a bath in a few minutes as I didn't get a chance last night with DS10 and DH having one. Then I will get out of the house, its grey and raining but at least its going out and a little bit of walking. DS10 needs new swim trunks (again!) for Friday and we need milk (again!)
I have been invited by friends to a big shopping centre tomorrow. Not really my thing and even if I don't buy anything, they are buying lunch out. However it is somewhere I rarely go, a break in a boring week and will be company so I am trying to persuade myself to go. Actually typing this has convinced me to go, I have birthday money so no excuse and I won't be wasting it on rubbish.

How is everyone else? A fair few people have been quiet....... come on you know who you are.....

Wishing all the poorlies, both animal and human, strokes/hugs and get well wishes. Onwards and upwards.

SQ, you should definitely go to the shopping centre, just for the day out, you don't need to spend. If you want to avoid lunch, tell them you're detoxing or some such and have a slice of lemon in hot water!

Good idea Softstuff, trouble is I don't have that much willpower!!! I will eat a decent breakfast and just buy a small scone and a cup of tea rather than what I would prefer.... a sandwich, a large latte and possibly a cake!!! Coffee shops were my weakness, my main treat and I haven't indulged for a while so I will have a snack out tomorrow without guilt.

my laptop is still playing silly beggars :( Am using the old desktop pc this morning instead, but it feels very strange. DS reckons the laptop's had it, but i can't afford a new one atm. It's 4 years old and was given to me by Disabled Student's Allowance when I was studying with the OU. When OH got his from them, the supplier had run out of the cheapest ones so he got a better one :D

SQ I so sympathise, this house needs a lot of urgent work done and there just isn't the money. We are getting a new-to-us water tank to go in the airing cupboard in the very near future, but that's sort of an emergency; atm we have rusty hot water because there must be a tiny hole in the coil inside the immersion tank, letting water through from the heating system. DS had put some stuff in the tank in the loft to clean the rust out of the pipes, and that is getting through into the hot water tank

So washing up means a couple of kettlefuls of boiling water + a bit of cold,or else using the slightly brown hot water and rinsing everything with cold water afterwards. Getting pee'd off with the whole thing, but it won't be for much longer, and they had to put up with far worse in wartime.

We need to raise the money for a new boiler, and OH has quite a lot of model vehicles he could sell, but is very reluctant. Most of them are just packed away in crates in the boxroom!

Oh dear, I do moan! Sorry folks. I'm sure I'll feel better later.

In that case SQ, make sure you put a big dollop of cream on that scone and think of me :rotfl:

Ivyleaf, if it was a rusty soaking or a collection of model vehicles I know which I'd pick, but some things are hard to part with and harder still to replace later. So often I've gotten rid of things in the past, selling them to fund other more important things. It's not as though I regret doing so, but do imagine sometimes what it would have been like had I not had to IYSWIM.

No Ivyleaf you don't moan I have noticed it is not something you tend to do. I agree with you as OH has the means to raise some money for a new boiler and you do not then he should sell something that is after all packed away not in use. Of course if you have the means of raising some money then it should be equal.

Well I for one am improving in my health I shall have to be well tomorrow to go to the hospital.

DS is also feeling a lot better but he says as soon as he puts weight on his knee he struggles to walk, more going up and down stairs on the bum. He will get no sympathy from me until he registers with a doctor. I do agree with him all he can do is rest it until he is better. I just feel it is time he got a doctor we never know when he may need one.
  • We now have a W8rose where our local Co-Op store used to be. It's the nearest supermarket of any size and I can walk there as it's only 1.7 miles. When they first opened I was mightily put off by the high prices but by chance one day arrived at 11ish in the morning just as they were doing their price reductions and found many bargains and prices on things that I wouldn't normally consider buying, like duck and smoked salmon that I could easily afford. Now I time my visits to arrive at that time of day, I have a W8rose card so I go and have my free coffee, saving a couple of coffee pods at home on the Nespresso, and drift around the store as they reduce. As a result we eat much nicer things than we used to and it doesn't cost any more than it always has, free coffee too means ours at home lasts longer between deliveries. SQ a nice free coffee and some bargains is well worth both the petrol to get there and the feeling of being happy at getting something nice for free, might cheer you up on a down day petal?
