Sorry MAR, they sound like they should be sweeties don't they? They are lovely as Peas and Bacon done with onion in an earthenware casserole for a very long slow cook in a low oven. It's very old fashioned fayre but in the middle of the cold weather it's delicious and fills you up a treat, Lyn xxx.

AOT would it be easier to get a blind for the kitchen window? not so fiddly to install as curtain rail and curtains and certainly easier to put up and down.

I'm in the middle of a small crisis. Took down kitchen curtains this morning - a difficult job as window is over the sink & unit so had to use steps (not good) - and in process the (very old) curtain rail broke. So now I have to buy a new rail and find someone to put it up for me - as well as the money to finance this.
The day is not going well for me.
AOT, I don't know if this would be appropriate for you or not but Age UK offer a handyman service for small jobs like that. They may be able to help?

    Afternoon all :)

does anyone know what a 'bloater' is. Reading the ragged trousers of philanthropists and find that some bloke is prodding a bloater over the fire. I have not got a clue!

Lunch today was a fried egg sandwich and by gosh it was lovely.

Got DD home :) she's had a wail of a time but starving - rice pud snack coming up as we're having a late tea.

Gammon and chips for our tea tonight and most probably another fried egg.... well the pan may as well get used again before washing eh? ;)

The blueberries have (finally!) turned blue. I'm leaving them a little bit longer before picking though. Don't worry, they're netted. Can anyone help me with pruning care of the blueberry bush? How much, where and when kind of thing?
  • Bloaters are herrings smoked intact with the guts in as opposed to kiippers which are herrings gutted and smoked. You remove innards from bloaters to eat them and you remove bones from kippers to eat them.

So pleased DD1 had a whale of a time on the school trip and so pleased that you were not on the ceiling for the whole time she was away too love, you've come an awful long way in a short time my girl and just look at who you are now!!! Well done that Fuddle!!!

Monna - as has been said so many times you and the Rev are both clearly well loved and cherished, and its important that people get the opportunity to share that with you before you leave :)

Burtha - well done on writing to the governors I hope you at least receive an apology for your son.

I have been trying to keep up but admit I am not on top of things at all. I have dealt with all manner of deaths and coped ok but this time I am struggling. Maybe because its affecting the kids too, maybe because I am unable to do anything useful or maybe because he was quite simply one of my best friends and the idea of never sharing a moment is incredibly hard.
Tomorrow I am aiming to kick myself up the backside and get on top of things. I really do have loads of things I must get done before DS16 goes into hospital next week.

I need help, I'm in the middle of a broad bean nightmare. I've even resorted to mixed bean chilli in pittas to use them up. We will use every single one up as I grew them myself ;)

Truth be told I'm not really keen on them...

I was like that last year with chard...still got about 6 "pancakes" of the stuff in the freezer & it's really bitter :(

Don't know about the pruning, but I hope my blueberries are turning blue too, they weren't when I looked yesterday

    Afternoon everyone

The alternatives to a prom sound great - well done burtha and possession. Have to admit I like the idea of a prom but not the expense. We live in a deprived area and our school are excellent at not asking for lots of money for things. No pressure to buy school logo and common colours for uniforms, never do sponserships etc. A lot of people struggle with finding money for the basics, odd school trip, bring a £1 to wear non-uniform etc. They organise a BBQ for our year six.

We had bacon and fried egg butties for tea at the weekend made by DH (makes a rare change!) and they were delicious and all the better when made by someone else! Guess who got to clear the detritus after though?

Been to DS7's musical performance today. DS7 was bursting to tell me the surprise element this morning (but contained himself) which was cakes made and decorated by the children and drinks. All was lovely but unusually took place outside and the heat was too much for me. Arrived at my mate's afterwards looking so red she wanted me to have a shower there. Cooled down at hers, dropped her in town and then off to Mr As-daaars, boy the chilled aisles were lovely :D. Picked up couple of reduced bits and stuck to the list for the rest.

Just had lunch, then a quick bath and hairwash as too late last night with a late parent's eve and an even later dinner. Tonight we have a school friend over and boys need baths so again the evening will be busy. Speedy tidy round and back up the school. My days seem to fly by more and more quickly the nearer we get to the end of the school year.

sending sunshine and cool breezes - take your pick
    SQ :)

Yes thinking of you Kidcat. Try to take some time for yourself even if just for a think.
