I'm not the biggest supporter of Brighton and Hove Council but they are determined not to allow Aldi to run rough shot over planning conditions. In December they applied for a THIRD time to have the 2 hour free parking limit reduced to 1.5 hours. For the THIRD time it was refused :rotfl:Thank you to all that opposed :D

"The applicant has failed to demonstrate that the
    reduced hours would allow
sufficient time for combined trips by the wider community between the store and the Boundary Road/Station Road District Shopping Centre and is has not been proven that the viability and the vitality of the district shopping area would not be unduly harmed by the hours proposed. The proposed development is not sustainable development in accordance with paragraph 14 of the National Planning Policy Framework as the adverse impacts significantly and demonstrably outweigh any benefits."

In other words, the planning consent effectively insisted it was a public car park, and the Council refuses to be conned into allowing it to become, in effect, an Aldi-only car park.

I see Aldi's only justification for this is a customer survey (done on a Friday) which showed that hardly any customers intended for a "linked" shopping trip to take more than 90 minutes.

Well if Aldi accepts the results of that survey (that already virtually no-one stays for more than 90 minutes), what's the problem they are trying to solve?

Of course, what their pathetic one-off survey overlooks is:

    (i) linked shopping trips to Aldi and the town centre would almost certainly be more frequent (and longer) on Saturdays. So why did they do the survey on a Friday?

(ii) Even if almost no-one does exceed 90 minutes for their shopping trip, once ParkingEye were infesting the car park the risk of exceeding 90 minutes and copping a fake fine would be enough to kill such linked trips stone dead (or could this be what Aldi really wants?)

Once again we see Aldi cynically agreeing to planning conditions which are not to its liking in the hope and expectation that it can later force them to be relaxed.

Passed an Aldi, new to me, in Ely last week, pe profiteering installed.

Didn't have camera, but can this week.

Saw 1.5 hrs 'allowed' , shopping-related, by pe.

But this is in the Planning Regs at 2.2
'The current proposal is for a single unit with a gross floor area of 1570m2 and a net sales area of 990m2, which will be positioned to the rear of the site. Car parking for 85 cars and 26 cycle spaces at the front of the store is proposed. Free car parking will be available for up to 3 hours.'

    But here:
    http://elycycle.org.uk/2012/03/23/cycle-parking-provision-at-new-aldi-is-woefully-inadequate/

-we see that 26 cycle spaces dropped to 8 and 1 car space is lost here:
'The store is served by 84 customer parking spaces, with an extensive range of around 2,500 product lines at affordable prices.'

-and note that halving of Planning Regs time in the Comments.

The planning conditions for this store include a requirement for 3 hours' free parking for the general public. However, there is also provision for the car park management plan to be varied by written agreement between Council and Aldi.

Whether such a variation has ever been agreed with respect to the 3 hours' free parking I have no idea, someone local needs to take this up with the Council.

If time allows tomorrow, I'll enquire.

The grammar's a suitable match for Aldi and fails throughout 'questionnaire' similarly.

If you normally shop at Waitrose or Lidl or Co-op you can't get past question 3...

Exactly so, this 'to do my dissertation topic on'is ghastly enough.
Pity her Supervisor. Ideas for a title?
