    Fill the freezer time.

Quite dullish here, but suddenly all the rowan berries are out & rudely red.

I once made wine with them & it was........like lighter fuel, or rather, how I would imagine lighter fuel to taste....disgusting & inflammable.

I'm going to be getting some more top soil soon. The economy stuff we got last time isn't as good as our own soil where its good, but is better than our soil where its bad. There are several grades from that supplier, I think four. I don't think we'll go for economy again, because it might as well not be worse than our best soil, right?

I guess this is a davesnave question, how good do you go for garden? This is an area with no remaining top soil, so it will all be new stuff coming in. But not a huge area, should we go for broke? Or aim lower? ( herb garden, raised beds mainly)

Herbs don't need rich soil, but they like good drainage. I'd go for medium quality with added grit.

Thanks dave. We put a lot of grit in the other beds too.

    Rain just started here.

Interestingly, despite hot spells, the regular heavy down pours have seemed to keep water table high. Digging down after first foot or so we hit water.

That pretty much follows the trees we've planted, the ones we had potted on from big pots have thrived really, that fox glove tree, the robinia ( that looks amazing, but its infront of an elder so won't photo that well!) but the newer buy ins are obviously reliant on us for watering.

.....Hitting August now, the relatively high water table doesn't really bode well for water table going into autumn/winter. Let's hope for an Indian summer, eh?

Lir has seen these pics already, but I thought the Daydreamers might like to see them too.

Didn't manage to get photos of the small tortoishells yet - maybe tomorrow. Suspect the Gatekeeper is too shy for me to manage a photo, had a helluva time yesterday even getting it still long enough to tell what it was for the Butterfly Survey. Which doesn't have long to run now (2 days?) so please get out and look for butterflies, count them, and send in your results!
