CTC sorry about the little one, I've obviously been lucky, never lost any to resp infection but have had the odd report back from the abattoir where the lungs were rejected. I'm really impressed they did the PM there for you.

Can't win, cold and damp brings it on, warm and mild does as well, I thought I'd seen the last of it since winter but had one reject just a few weeks ago.

And as for people and dog poo, I agree the camera idea would be my next move, was in maplins having a look myself lately...

Shame about the timber Dave, I am also not throwing anything out unless it was damp, in which case it's firewood, it's so bloomin expensive to buy you can't waste a bit.

Got absolutely drenched yesterday, hottest day my ar$€!!! I peeled my clothes off at about 5.30, wacked the heating on and ran a bath. But a little pain now will pay me back.

I'm getting well ahead in the garden, building more raised beds today so the digger man can load up my dumper tomorrow with the latest mountain of topsoil, beats wheelbarrowing it all, not doing that again! Also going to shift some of the muck heap into the bottom of the beds, kills two birds with one stone.

Plus he's making great progress on all the other jobs, got an area ready for a new hedgerow and he's levelled the site for my polytunnel, I really want to get that built ASAP. He's going to be making me a pond today to catch the water a neighbour deposits into my ditches, try and slow it down plus got a reservoir for animals and somewhere for the ducks and geese to play!

Alfie sorry to hear your dogs are not 100%, the warm weather takes it out of them at any age. I've been keeping an eye on my old collie as he easily exhausts himself.

Sorry to hear you're not well too choille, sounds agonising, like something I've had before, couldn't sleep, need to drink constantly.

Right, must go and make the most of a dry day, it's going to be another epic one!

FK... luckily the one that died didn't have any lung damage.. so fingers crossed the others haven't.. I will be on tender hooks for the next few days until the anti -b's and anti-flam fully kicks in... and hopefully there will be no more fatalities..

I also wouldn't advise letting any animals drink any of the run off water... I think if it was me, I would do some sort of culvert and fence it off so the animals cant drink it.

Also don't forget you are not allowed and run off water go into streams etc.. and also in the main drains if I read it right..

So before doing anything I would double check what you are allowed to do, OR.. try and get your neighbour to sort out the run off, off their land to stop it going onto your land if that makes sense...

Still little edible growth in the garden :( I have planted what seems like loads with no results! Not sure why the salad tubs did not thrive, maybe they were too dry?

What can I plant now that will have a chance other than salad, radishes and spring onions?

FK... the more I think about the more I think you shouldn't do a pond or anything from the run off from your neighbour's garden/land etc...

hubby and I were just talking more about it, and your neighbour could use weedkiller or ANYTHING on their land which could send contaminated water down to your pond etc, which your animals will be drinking..

PLUS how and what will you do with the overflow from the pond??? you cant divert that into the main drains/streams anymore, you will have to have a natural soakaway on your land, so it soaks into your land...

If you have a neighbour whose land is above yours, there's not much that can be done about water coming from their place to yours, CTC.

I think that's what FK means: i.e. her ditch picks up water from elsewhere. We are the same, though 'elsewhere' is an arable field across the road, all the drains along the road and a field way beyond Mr Dog's, which drains along a footpath and down into the road drains!

When building a pond, it's best to slow the water before it enters, either by having a small dump pond first, where most of the silt can drop, or by channeling through a reed bed, which will have the benefit of cleaning the water too. :)

Just failed to secure a wheeled brushcutter on the Bay again. Went just beyond my limit. Still, I made someone else pay a respectable price for it! :p

IIRC it's OK to leave a natural run-off of water from your land to another's but you can't enhance drainage/direct flow onto someone else's ground.

Thanks for the good wishes. This bug was caught from elderly neighbours & I feel weak & wan, so they most be stronger than I.

FK - Do you sell your sheep? Do you just fill the freezer? I can't get a decent price for my lambs at all.

Hot here, but had to lie down after work today & missed most of it!
Mega washing to peg out & attend to. It's not worth while this cleaning holiday lets. It works out at a ridiculous low rate..................

from what i understand re the water/pond etc. [ we had to sort out our ditches etc] it is the "nitrates" ?? created en route to waters final resting place so to speak. we had enviro man advise us. he said leaving plants etc bordering ditches helps diffuse nasties BUT he emphatically said unless we can garuntee the source of the water we must NOT let livestock drink it.[fields surround us so potential for contamination] late last year we had oil appear in the water. we had to get oil mats and floats to mop it up. then had machine to clear soil etc. cost a bomb BUT no animal got to it. ducks/geese may get away with ponds/ditches but a classic sign of any contamination is eye infections. we have now blocked them from ditches and they have the spring fed lake. this is just my experience, its obviously up to the individuals confidence in the water.
