  • Been busily chopping up "overdone" surplus food grown and planning on more "harmless" type weeds next, in order to do the permaculture idea of mulch made from dead plant material over bare soil (as "plant food" and protection against live weeds and marauding moggies).

So, the various weeds in the vicinity are:
couchgrass, bittercress, nettles (planning on making "plant food" from nettles soaked in water anyway), ferns, bindweed, yer more standard type garden weeds, ivy, brambles.

Looks like I can safely use yer more "standard" type garden weeds and bittercress okay. Is that so?

Is it okay to use bindweed/ivy/brambles chopped up (I'm erring on the side of caution on this and not doing so).

Is it okay to use ferns chopped up? I'm guessing it would be.

    hi all
i had some bee keepers round today that had advertised for sites..
the woman was one of those people that come across as pompous looking down on the "oiks"....
luckily its not HER that would be siting the bees, she's just the "look out"....
anyway she found a site which is a strip of land hedged my side and stock fenced t'other. about 4ft wide.. she seemed to think ideal. i did ask if there was a chance of them going rogue and attacking my animals.. she paused and said unlikely... now im not sure !!

Bees fly mainly south east when leaving the hive.

If you have animals you want the bees flying above their head height when they start to fly - we send our over a 2 metre fence.

Bees do not like vibrations (their main means of in-hive communication) which means:

No chance that that livestock can try to rub themselves against the sides or corners of the hive.

No pounding of hooves vibrating through the soil as animal gallop past. They do not like lawnmowers or tractors either.

And please be careful with that paint.............
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

If young bitter cress is a lovely salading.

I would not mulch bindweed or compost. Brambles I would dessicate first.

ah! now i told the pomp woman they would be harvesting in the field adjoining !! BIG field of barley [i think] also the hive would be north of the hedge... they would be blocked by the hedge /garage/house to face south .
to explain ... front of house faces north. in front of house is drive, bordering 6ft hedge then land strip then field. so they would have to go UP about 15ft to clear garage to then go SE ?? if that makes sense...:o

Makes huge amount of sense - can map it out from what you have written.

My next q to pomp woman would be is there enough distance between hive and garage to ensure they get sun in the morning (not shaded much of the day).

Is the land beyond the hedges yours or does it belong to the big barley field?

Thunder been rumbling around here for a couple of hours now, so far had a few drips of rain. I'd love to have some thunder rain on both the garden and the lottie (even though it will make the weeds go mad as well as the plants). It looks as if the storm might be moving closer, just saw a couple of flashes that looked closer then the earlier ones (about 6 miles to the SW of us) but it's hard to tie the flash to sound as it seems a constant low growl now. Figure the thunder in the air was why I had headache at the lottie this afternoon - I hardly ever get headaches so was a tad worried, but now the storm is breaking I feel less worried.

We didn't manage the nemaslug yesterday, but ground too crusty to put it down anyway at the mo, so OH watered the plants today. If we get a decent wetting we'll be going down tomorrow to do the stuff. It's in date till the end of the month, so is sitting cosy in the fridge at the mo. ;)

Suddenly gone VERY dark so might go sit in porch. Oooh, lightning and then rumble only few secs after. Deffo going out to watch! Rain arriving, latest flash less than mile away! Next only half mile! See you later hopefully!

    Torrential rain!

Storm seems to moving away now.

Waste of time for dear OH who watered the plants on lottie this afternoon. :o But we been promised rain for ages now that didn't materialise, so it was a case of better safe than sorry!

Mint sauce just arrived prior to slow roasted lamb with garlic, rosemary and thyme, accompanied with New Jersey Royal spuds and home grown Sutherland kale... So better go!
