Lol, wrong time of year!
He might have to have a chicken house. Despite saying I'm not getting anymore a little brown hen has turned up having been tucked away nesting somewhere for a while, and she is NOT alone.0 -

It occurred to me if it were raised a bit, and the lower, deeper part is smaller, so fits in by the pipe, would banks to the edge of the pond look a bit 'telly tubby' ish?
Yes, I think it might, or it could create problems for mowing too.
To my mind, a pond should blend seamlessly in its setting, or if that's not possible, stand proud and say,"I'm a formal pond, come and sit on my edge and gaze into my depths."
Often, people's attempts at ponds do neither of these.:(0 -

Err, that DD won't. It's the younger DD that had the ferrets.
Older DD has two cats though, one of which is a Bengal.
Enough said!

Ah, I didn't know that about time of year

That's ok, many do plant potted fruit trees now. Be use its a hedgerow plan I don't want to commit myself to watering it
Little brown hen is a silky. Ross millefleur Peking bantam. Her chicks will by crossed with a silkie/silkie bantam cross dad. ( presuming they are all her eggs, one of the millefleurs might have been laying in same spot. The brown hen is quite, quite wild, unlike a Peking bantam or a silkie, very flighty. Very opinionated, and barely tolerates domestication. She seems quite a proud mother though..
