We have a mini fruit tree orchard :D pear, plum, couple of apples and a cherry tree. All have produced fruit except for the pear. I would like to add more as we have the space and the plum especially is a great producer. There is a long space at the bottom of the garden that I would like to put fruit trees/bushes in just not sure which ones yet.

My attitude to fruit is that first I want to get in things that are expensive to buy ( like quince and figs) or have to be foraged ( I'd like some cherry plums and nuts soon ). I want standard things like apples and plums, ( we have good plums and gage here ATM any way, but some will get lost in clearing, and they are very tall, so planting younger ones for future planning is not a bad idea) but I find them harder to choose . E.g. I bought watermelon plums from Morrisons this year to eat and they were delicious, if trees of those could be source, despite historical I accuracy, it would be a winner. Better fruit we eat and enjoy than fruit we feel is ' historically nice'. Apples are quite my favourite thing, but it think I might be a philistine there too. I love old varities, but is also love new varieties, like tentacion, what a beautiful apple that is, and DH likes jazz ( think its justu because its called jazz, mind you) and I love juicy Fuji apples. And apple where the juice runs down your chin, however lacking in tart, is delicious. I am a big fan of the humble Granny Smith for a little juice for me, and for several dessert recipes, but they are very inexpensive comparatively. They would get used though. Plums, I like big fat round ones, not mean ones. I know DH is very keen to get a damson and bull ace or few in. ( I am thinking hedgerows might be best for this so as to not take up orchard space.)

Kaki are amazing, if we got fruit one year in five I'd be overwhelmed with happiness, nothing beats them. Pomegranates I don't think set fruit here well, but they are decorative and would earn their keep in a flower garden, so that's worth considering.

    .

The pears are funny. We bought them mainly because they seemed easy to cut teeth on with learning training techniques and because Special Girl loved pears and so I was hoping she'd eat lots of these. I think from the cheese room they are slightly more decorative and unexpected than apples! but it wouldn't have been enough buy itself to convince me.

I wish I hadn't lost my touch with citrus, because we use a LOT of lemons and limes and I'd eat grapefruit every day. ( my one survivor wintered out last year).

I'm thinking we have to give up on the holly this year, its going no where fast. I'd like juniper, but apparently that's risky near pears, ( how near is near I wondering? And other wise I might just try transplanting some privet. Not want we want, but really want shielding now.

All land is owned by someone, yes things changed a few years back, To put a 'claim' on a plot of land, you have to have photographic, statement evidence to prove you have been maintaining/using that land. it has had to have been fenced off. then after x amount of years, you put a claim in with the land registry, which will contact the legal owners of the land... the legal owners have 2 years to dispute this claim. after that the land is still owned by the legal owner, but you are allowed to carry on using the land... that's what I got told...

If people are using council land, eventually the council, will ask you to 'get off their land' if you do not, then they start court preceedings to get a warrant to get you off the land, which will prob involve bailiffs etc...

    BUT I could be wrong....

Gosh, so much to read up on.....!!!!

Sorry you were confined to bed yesterday, Better Days; it was such a lovely day, made even better by being very quiet. :shhh:Dunno what Mr Dog is up to but I've not heard much at all for 2 weeks. It can't last!

Squatting, adverse possession, whatever....been there, done that. Did it the day I moved into my last house, then invited neighbour to do the same, because he thought he owned the land. Neither of us did. It was owned by a local charitable trust, who took so much interest, they've not yet realised, 27 years later..... :rotfl:Too late! :p It was only a few square metres, but it made all the difference to living where we were, because we gained a shared back gate, and that knocked 5 minutes off the walk into town. :D

Lawnmower gave me a lot of grief early yesterday , but the seller had just been lazy in preparing it, so when I'd adjusted it, put oil in it (!) etc, it worked beautifully.:)

I lost hours looking up all the info though.....:( Seller still thinks it's coming back to him, as he didn't want to lose his 100% positive feedback. I'll put him out of his misery tonight, which is soon enough, considering how much time I lost! Anyway, it's great to finally have a machine that does the chicken orchards without complaint. :D

Somehow, I did find time to spray all the thistles and docks on the top field, but then it takes less time each year now. In theory, Rummer's idea of listening to a podcast would be good, but in practice, despite the routine work, it's very hard to maintain concentration. There's a constantly changing reference point to watch and it's amazing how many weeds slip past if you don't stay alert. Of course, there are loads of different weeds, and most are being allowed to go past unmolested. Or maybe I'm just an old twit with a poor attention span!:rotfl:

No you are not wrong, CTC, your summary of the changes in the law is better than I could manage, but going to law over land isn't a cheap ride. If someone is claiming a bit of your land, money, put a fence around it and don't even discuss it. Let them go to law ......because they won't!

PS, DD1 finally exchanged on that wreck of a house with a huge garden yesterday. Good job it's a long way away! :rotfl:

Seller procrastinated so long, I thought it wouldn't happen.

They refused to exchange because he wasn't supplying certs for work done, but finally those materialised. Place has been empty and showing SSTC for over 6 months! No rhyme or reason to it. :(

I'm still looking for may be two more trees to close this garden, I just cannot decide what. I am considering cherries, don't know how well they will espalier. One technically would be top close to the house unless I pot grew.

I've been looking at espalliering fruit trees too - would be perfect for down one side of the lottie when we take out the rest of the raspberries. There's a really good blog post on doing it from Life on Pig Row. Actually, it's titled Fan Training Cherries, is that different to espaliering?

Opinions please, on a 'ornamental' garden issue.

I am back on to ponds.

Where we want to sink a pond we cannot because of an underground pipe. I don't really want a raised pond, I don't know why.

It occurred to me if it were raised a bit, and the lower, deeper part is smaller, so fits in by the pipe, would banks to the edge of the pond look a bit 'telly tubby' ish?

Davesnave.... hahaha I am sure even tough you live far away, you will be helping with the garden one way or another...

It was our 20th wedding Anniversary yesterday..where does the time go???? it was just another day to us lol..

Van more or less packed up, home now so I can sort out caravan, quails, bath, find clothes to take, go shopping... etc.. and all by tea time lol...

totally silly considering the line of business I am in, but I don't have that many clothes, and I allways wear the same ones, true believer in wash and wear lol... so I might have to go and BUY something to look presentable while serving on our stall...

FK ... are you ready for the weekend??? are you going up tomorrow to set up or Saturday morning???

I am so useless, I had forgotten to plan for anniversary coming up soon.

Hmm, I cannot remember how long we've been married. I think it might be nine years this year.

    I cannot believe it!
