I'm fine thanks, poppy,:j although I certainly know I've been digging all weekend!
We only managed another 10 trees today, as we've reached the more difficult soil now, where just digging a hole is tricky. I believe this area lower on the slope has never been ploughed. We've removed barrow loads of stones.
I believe others continued to bask in sunshine today, but we lost it mid-morning and there's even been a bit of hill fog and drizzle. That being the case, we went for it and fired-up our second bonfire, rather than risk having it dampened after a dry week.
When we were discussing log splitters, I forgot to mention that I bought one of these this winter to hold my electric chainsaw:

I'm very pleased with it, as it makes cutting logs much faster and safe. It's best if it has a saw permanently attached, as there's then no messing about setting it up.0 -

We had a dull day here and a bit of drizzle late afternoon. However I dragged the family to a local farm and we watched the milking, saw the calves and walked through the countryside which was just what I needed
Also managed to break in my wellies which had been incredibly uncomfortable up until today
Not sown anything yet as I think it is too cold for them to thrive so I am going to wait until next month or even later  It goes against all my instincts however this year will be different :rotfl:Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Hi all,
well got TOTALLY side tracked today up the ranch... started clearing the garden side of the hedge, to try and get it cleared etc so we can see exactly what we can plant/do to fill in the gaps etc.. and started clearing around what we thought was an old coal bunker..
It was like time team lol
It looks as though they made some sort of thing to heat water, as the is a chimney type thing in the back, and there is a cast iron very deep bowl still in situ ( the other one has gone, the only thing we can think of, maybe it was to prepare the chickens for the table???? outside clothes washing???Work to live= not live to work0 -
Oooooooh how exciting! I wonder what it was for??Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

also finished painting our little chalet shed, that we bought nearly 2 years ago, but only put up last week... was going to be for chickens etc up the ranch, but for now it will be used to store wood
and here is our hedge with is supposed to give us privacy in our garden from people walking on the footpath( which you can see just infront of the hedge
we have this stuff on part of the hedge on the other side ( further down the lane)
Davesnave do you know what this is??? as we were thinking this stuff might do to fill in the gaps too, as it is quite denseWork to live= not live to work0 -
People did have coppers (made of cast iron!) in brick outhouses to do the washing, similar to that, CTC. Why out of doors??? And in Wales??
There has to be a reason why it was outside. Is there any chance there might have been a corrugated iron roof on an open pole barn structure over it?
Plucking chickens did/does involve hot water and potentially a lot of mess, so maybe that would have been a good enough reason to do it in the open?0 -

Would you want feathers every where, or to work outside on a grim day? I think the idea of a makeshift structure around the copper seems plausible in that scenario though!
Our cheese room/kitchen/utility areas here had three old coppers in them (gone before we got here...seen them on plans only). Which they'd still been here!0 -
Sorry, I've no idea what that tree/bush is, CTC. It looks as if it grows tight though.
Your hedge is capable of being laid, and in fact it should be, as the trees are growing thin and straggly. As you say, there are gaps, which need filling with whatever you fancy.
At first a laid hedge is low, but the new shoots should make 3' of growth in their first year. It doesn't need cutting for two years at least.0
