Called in a tthe garden centre on my way home today. I was looking at rhubarb and they had the following varieties: Glaskins Perpetual, Victoria and Timperly Early. Can anyone recommend them. I was thinking about getting 3 plants but then thought I don't want to be rhubarb'd out IYKWIM. So possibly just or 1 if there is an outstanding one listed above.

Could you do one of those exchange thingies where people come and work on your land and you provide bed and food? It would be a great opportunity for someone and it would give you a hand. Failing that a local agricultural college/gardening course and get students to do the design as a project?
We have just twenty mins down the road a nag college which does garden design courses, I don't know how I'd even ask, I've thought about asking there is any students want to garden occasionally too.
We also have the most amazing garden design school (and designer) in Dave's favourite town in my county but when I look at students websites they look........a but boring.. The lecturer who lives here his designs are......beautiful. Thing is, I like plants, and while I certainly benefit from more knowledge I don,to want some one to try and talk me into things I don't like or not incorporate things I do.
The hollies and hedge type things, this is new to me and I haven't done it well. There is no doubt. So I need to decide what to do for the best goring forward.0 -
LIR Why not drop them an email? Nothing ventured and nothing gained
When you find someone have a note of anything you want included and a summary of what you want and get them to design based on that. They should not be trying to talk you into anything unless what you have chosen is completely unsuitable for where you want it.
Or...... you could go on the courseThen you can get all the knowledge, see everyones ideas and create your perfect garden. There is a course like that an hour away from me which is just too far

If the hollies have roots I'm loathes to disturb them (would they hope with a replant. but watching them die gets depressing too!!!!
Maybe I should accept I need a gardener..
If the hollies are really small, then digging them out with a good sod of earth attached shouldn't hurt any more than the digging out I've done today on 2 year-old hornbeams that I'm planting on the Thatcher's border. Those plants came to me as bare root 1 year olds, but I've lifted them with most of the soil attached, so they should barely notice the move this time.:D
Lift, improve replace, all on the same day?
Hollies seem to put up with abuse here. We dug one out and it sat there on the surface with about 1 cubic foot of soil around the roots for a whole year. Then I felt sorry for it, so re-planted. It sulked for a year, but it's going really well now.0 -

No...
Should I worry?
I think she is possibly looking for an adventure......:D. Life's too easy in the luxe house!
I AM going to contact you because I need to get details from you ( my pm box is full but I WILL clear space tomorrow). I asked Alfie if I was half way between you and her and she thinks is a much longer drive for you.. Otherwise was going to suggest lunch sometime at my wreck.

I am here :j logging on between seemingly never ending feeds!
Freezing cold here today  so I went to the library and got the Alys Fowler Thrifty Gardner bookI really enjoy her style of writing and loved the TV series she had. I do wish she would do another. The Edible Garden is an annual enjoyment for me.
It would be nice to get out and do a bit more in the garden however Rumlet seems unwilling to set me free :rotfl: Just as well he is so gorgeous and funny!Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
Like Alfie I am going to be without phone line until April after the weekend.
Thought I better mention it instead of disappearing for a couple of weeks0
