Just bone meal if you want to do it naturally and cheaply. I use Osmocote 12 month in pots, but it could be used in the soil.
I have a trade account with these people. A 25kg bag of Osmo (as they won't let you see the prices) is about £100.

I went out to browse ( and stay sane) and came home with a cercis chi Avondale. Not evergreen. But deliciously and unrelentingly vivid on a day I benefitted from it. It will go in front of the evergreens, its not big.
I hadn't been to that nursery all last year and when I went and saw these the woman at the till said, oh...YOU! And took me round the back to the cheaper ones.....mine had a bit of a flat profile....which is ideal for me!0 -

I'm fine most of the time, thanks, but although the pain's controlled, I still get tired. I've only managed four hours work today.
It's just a waiting game, but if nothing happens by Friday I'll have to refer myself back to the doc. I let the tablets wear off a little to see if it was still there this morning....and it was, despite me drinking gallons. :wall:
While the weather is this good, I'm happy to hold on. One of my (younger ) relatives had this last year and they kept him in hospital for two whole days!
Edit: lir, I grew a cercis from seed and I was very proud of it. Lost it the first winter we spent here.:mad:0 -
I saw a gorgeous plant today that had green quite angular leaves edged with purple, no idea what it was, but it was pretty
There may be another Dreamers meet this yearI am planning on heading Choilles way over the summer which is very exciting.
Now that the herb garden is tidy there are quite a few spaces that need to be filled and I am considering fennel and maybe a few other less common herbs. I ponder this every year so I want to act now before I let time drift on again! Currently we have:- Lavender
- Chives
- Rosemary
- Mint - 3 types
- Sage - a few types which we have never actually used
- Thyme
Basil we grow indoors over the summer as it has never taken outside here.
So not exactly a vast range and I would like to grow things that can be used for herbal infusions as I drink a lot of herbal based things and fresh ones would be lovely. Off to plan and research :rotfl:Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -
holm oak. How about holm oak where my wee hollies are struggling? They like it free draining too, right?
I wonder if I should dig up and pot the hollies, dig out the bed again and dig in more grit, and start again.. Can you tell I'm losing patience? I want privacy.......tomorrow!

They do like good drainage. Take a year or two to settle, then growth is pretty good. Individual plants may have different habits: I have two, and one is certainly more upright, while the other spreads a bit.0 -
LIR I can empathise with your thoughts about the garden. There is so much I would like to do to ours however I do not have the time/money/knowledge/confidence to get it done and as such year after year I procrastinate get worried about it and end up doing little or nothing.
Today I went out and cleared another couple of paths so it is at least starting to look a bit tidier. What I am putting off though is the broken fence and brambles that are lying in a tangle at the bottom of the garden.
There are so many things that our house and garden need and I am going to have to list and prioritise what I want done and then start saving.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0 -

Give up the idea, or dog out hollies and dig in shed loads of grit?
If the hollies have roots I'm loathes to disturb them (would they hope with a replant. but watching them die gets depressing too!!!!
Maybe I should accept I need a gardener..

Could you do one of those exchange thingies where people come and work on your land and you provide bed and food? It would be a great opportunity for someone and it would give you a hand. Failing that a local agricultural college/gardening course and get students to do the design as a project?Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0
