Went out a couple of hours ago to find 2 queen bumble bees in the front garden - one on hellebore, one sampling several flowers of the ornamental quince. :j First I've seen this year. :)
  • FK have you got any links please..

the only grants I can see at mo are the ones with the welsh assembly, with grants for social enterprises etc and something to do with preventing poverty etc in wales...

Will have a proper look later, and will ask the NFU tomorrow, as we are now members...

Dave what kinds would you recommend? It would be great to have a longer raspberry season :D

I have no recent experience, but I understand Tulameen, Glen Ample and Polka are all worth consideration, the latter being a late primocane type.

Thank you Dave :D I will have a look at them. We are trying to decide where to move them so that we can free the back garden up for pretty things and move all our food production to the side garden.

I have posted a thread to get ideas for my border but I have found a section on the Crocus website that gives border ideas so I am going to have a good look through them too. This year we are going to turn our back garden into a relaxing and gorgeous place to be :D

PP is something on the horizon for you?

Hopefully a move to Scotland sooner rather than later, fingers crossed. Plans have changed in the last few months, including a possible career change for DH, which would involve him doing another degree for 4 years

No idea if things will work out, but I'm hopeful.

I'm thinking about learning Gaelic :o

There is literally naff all out there at the moment, purse strings are very tight. I've got a company helping me with business planning etc who seem to think some might become available at some point but not holding my breath and can't wait too long. There was a couple of schemes that probably would apply but they are fully subscribed, or we were outside their area of remit, geographically, some were to do with renovating bldgs...have you tried your council? Guessing you aren't CCC like us?

    Will PM you more specifics...

At the moment, absolutely no idea!! :rotfl: We might be skipping a stage & going straight for the Highlands, it really depends on whether DH can get into University this year, or if he'll have to wait (more likely as he's a late applicant) until 2015.

Learning Gaelic is quite daunting, so it's good to hear of people doing it who love it, thank you :D

Money, not all green leafy vegetables are equal and some are much easier than others. Most people can grow chard, mustards, lettuce etc, but cauliflowers are much harder. Also, some of the oriental greens, like pak choi, are a magnet for every known pest, so they will need protection if you are to see a crop at all. Been there. :(

I can vouch for the difficulty of growing cauliflowers (didn't have any joy with broccoli either :o) as we tried for the first time last year. Instead we were inundated with lettuce of many varieties - way too much for our needs ;)

This year we're going to rethink our *kitchen garden* and although we interspersed the beds liberally with edible flowers, I think we need to reconsider exactly which things we'll eat (and were more successful previously) and plant accordingly otherwise we'll just end up throwing stuff away......

We also need to reconfigure the soft fruit areas as we neglected them somewhat last year and (whether we sell up during 2014 or not) we need to make the most of the available space allocated to these :o

Before that though we need to do some work to the boundary involving erecting some new stone walls with the leftovers from our building work......the majority we traded at the reclamation yard for an extremely nice antique kitchen prep table which works well alongside the island, but we kept enough back for our next outside project - just need some dry weather now :D
