  • Anyway we decided to go ahead and since about October we have had major work going on here. I have tried to let the builders get on with it but I am having to be on hand all the time for every decision so wasting a lot of time. That said, it's better than other builders I've used who carry on without asking then stuff has to be redone...

Some people on this thread (knowing about my house renovation saga) will understand why I instantly checked to see what part of country you are in. Tick..thought so. Will understand why I've just shaken you by the hand virtually in sympathy on that.

Go on peeps reassure us both that it happens like that everywhere...even in cities....

Really must get back to work!

    Take care all :)

I have a vintage one bought on ebay as working condition but seriously not. Be very careful! :(. Would with care be so , but I cannot face it.

We've decided on a vermont castings for the study I think. Top loading, nice hot plate, and nicer than the Brit styled ones I think.
  • FK... What grant was it??

As I am wondering if there is any grants available for turning the brick building into a cold/freezer room with kitchen etc for the meat...even though all our meat is processed and packed etc at the abotoir , with a purpose build cold/freezer room and kitchen then we could be rated etc by the council then, and then sell at markets and to food establishments.. where as now we can only sell to family and friends...

  • Just had quick google re which vegetables are brassicas in case I have acid soil.

I shall be growing, amongst other things, cabbages, cauliflower, sprouting broccoli and bok choi.

I have landcress currently growing and that weed bittercress and I guess they are both brassicas? They are both doing well.

It will, quite largely, be green leafy type vegetables I will be growing all round.

On the other hand, maybe a fair bit of soil now in my garden isn't acid (even if the garden originally was) because its new topsoil that I've had added and paid for. Therefore I would imagine any paid for topsoil is going to be pretty neutral by definition? If it isn't then I wants me monies back....

When can you move raspberries? Our canes are 6 years old, should I move them or replace them?

The grant is for primary agriculture only ie nowt to go towards our processing and storage areas. Although our business plan shows our income increased by doing this and increasing direct sales. So...We're using the grant to increase/upgrade animal accommodation to habitable, concrete the yard for hygiene/ safety reasons and also drainage and fencing. Just got it in the nick of time too, blooming weather  tho it's quite sunshiny at times today.

lir yes we've had a fire place off the bay, knew it needed work, still sitting in hallway! but have now changed mind and want a stove. Going for something European and enamelled...and refurbished! they cost similar to new but have more character I think. Builder reckons try sticking it in the fireplace, with the flue pipe going up a few feet- it had a decent draw, so might save a fortune on liners and 'proper' installation...

money yes I'm in Wales too, very near CTC. But as it happens neither of the sets of builders are welsh, both here from SE England! Had a bad experience with local builder, left half finished, I booted him off the job!

PP is something on the horizon for you?

If you are happy with them, you can take the newest bits when moving them and discard the oldest parts.

There are quite a few new varieties which could spread the raspberry season for you, however, and as they're a long term, high value crop, the investment in some others might be worthwhile. :)

Money, not all green leafy vegetables are equal and some are much easier than others. Most people can grow chard, mustards, lettuce etc, but cauliflowers are much harder. Also, some of the oriental greens, like pak choi, are a magnet for every known pest, so they will need protection if you are to see a crop at all. Been there. :(
