Jayne - That sounds like a cracking plan.
Have you seen a book called Forest Gardening - mines packed away Somewhere but it's good & covers subjects such as creating micro climates?
There was talk here of creating woodland crofts that folks could acquire, but don't know if it ever got off the ground.
Some people do live in a woodland without anyone knowing or planning been gained - which is rather good I think.
Hi choille yes I've got a couple of books about forest gardening and have watched lots of youtube vidoes with Martin Crawford, who runs the agroforestry trust. I remember seeing him on ' A Farm for the Future' (highly recommended BTW you can find it on youtube), which is where I first heard about forest gardening and permaculture. I remember thinking that just makes so much sense why doesn't everyone do it...
I did a permaculture design course too a couple of years ago so would love to put it into practice on a bigger scale.
That might include an experiment with natural building materials - just for research you understand;)COOLTRIKERCHICK wrote: »morning all,
JC... there was that guy on grand designs? a few years back who owned/managed a wood, charcoal etc... and he just about managed to get planning permission to built an eco house out of wood etc.. BUT the only downside was that he was not allwed to sell it, or it had to be pulled down or something after his days????
It was an absolutely Fab place....
He now does woodland management coarses etc
Ben Law - yes I love, love that house. I would love to attend one of his courses, but he is a bit far away from me. Maybe one day...
I do plan on getting a couple of his books tho.
I heard that he's filming a documentary at the moment, I'll definitely be watching that.Official DFW nerd - 282 'Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts'

We lost a plum tree. Hard to see in the light which one but we couldn't get out of the side gate earlier. Will have a look in the morning.
Praying that everything else stays standing.
i hope ive remembered everything
sink, taps, fire pot thing, cabinets, ME, brushcutter .....0 -
Ooooh, more Permies here. You sound pretty serious about all this, Jayne. I did an introductory course to Permaculture, but I've only been an armchair gardener really, so far. I've been too wrapped up with other things. I'm a little frustrated that my three raised beds which I did last year as a practice run have been entirely chomped by the geese. They have eaten all the bloody strawberry plants I bought from Sheffield and my perrenial herbs. Grrr!
It's blowing a hoolley here at 4.30am. Consequently I'm wide awake0 -
Too dark to see anything, but it sounds quiet and it wasn't windy when we got back from the pub.....which is about the last thing I remember!
Don't think it's reached us....... yet!0 -
wow I can hear the wind picking up now.. I am surprised I have slept in until now, but it did take me ages to drop off..
Alfie you take care out there, while driving to LIR's
All I can say is good job its been a mild winter, as I think we would all have been house bound and snow up to the rafters otherwise...
JC... have you seen any woods for sale lately that might suit what you are looking for?? what are they going for??
All I can say is, every bloody penny saved is a penny towards your dream...be as frugal/thrifty as you dare/feel comfortable with. and no money making/raising idea is a silly one.. ( as long as it does make/get some extra money in) and no amount of extra money made/saved is too small..
Some of the things I was doing 15 plus years ago, I am doing again... to try and save some pennies to help get our place ready to move in, and I am going to have a dabble at growing some, veg plants again to sell, and try growing some cottage garden style flowers, to test the water with locally grown bunches/posies of flowers..
I am going hell for leather on swagbucks, to see if I can get anywhere near enough to buy a polytunnel ( amazon haven't got the seller we want to buy from, so might end up buying other gardening stuff out of the vouchers)
and I am doing the adnecter points... which will hopefully get me a very small shop of basics in sainsbobs..Work to live= not live to work0 -
Not too bad this morning, just a winter's ( or early spring) day. Bit windy, rather wet,
Looks like what we lost last night was a big branch rather than a tree, DH is doing morning round so he'll check for more damage.0 -
Rain lashing down and wind whistling about the house in Glasgow.
So much moss has got dislodged from tiles, the downpipe has blocked and water's coming over the guttering
Just as well I cleared the French drains yesterday, all are pouring water from the garden.0 -
Still nothing terribly unusual, just rain and a bit of wind...
The electricity people must be behind with their schedule, as we were due to go off from 8am till 5pm on Tuesday, but they've cancelled that. By the time they get around to it, the sheep will have mangled their stuff, which they deposited by the poles in readiness. Most of it is fairly indestructible, but it's now incredibly mucky and the sheep have managed to move short connecting wires several metres! :rotfl:
Don't they know about sheep? :eek:0
