    Maggie, so sorry about Brodie.

    Lir, glad it went well.

One of our chooks, the cuckoo maran, died last night. Buried her first thing :(

May have first signs of blight on spuds, will take out affected leaves tomorrow and see if it spreads.

Love to have positive news but its a bit of a downer today

Chickens can go quite suddenly, rhiwfield, sometimes without any obvious cause too. I'd rather that than the "do we, don't we?" decisions one has to make otherwise. :(

Trying to be upbeat here, but it was Day 3 of our purge on the carpet moths, and in tackling the guest bedroom we found a damp patch on the floor under the bed. It's not terrible, but I can only think that there's a leak in pipe down there, as it's roughly in line with where a pipe would go from the radiator in the other bedroom to the one in there. As for the moths, their numbers are dwindling fast, but I know this will be a long battle!

Hmmm, one of my volunteer spuds was looking dodgy this afternoon too, so I pulled it. Ours are just flowering now, but I will monitor closely. Meanwhile, the first tomatoes are turning so we should have a few to try on Friday. :)

In the ornamental garden we have been planting-up with everything from shrubs down to rockery type geraniums. The new part is taking some filling, but every plant put in is one less to water in a pot! Weed growth in this area is still prodigious, but in the part we completed last year, the perennials & shrubs have achieved good cover and so that area's manageable.

LiR, glad your gruesome stuff went OK - do you have a long wait for results? Hope that all will be well. Hugs (if you feel OK about accepting cyber hugs from someone you never met!) (((((LiR)))))

Alfie, hope you have a nice birthday visit with your Dad. You sound very busy, please try and take some time out to smell the roses! ;) Methinks you might be overdoing things a bit.

Thank you all for your kind messages about Brodie. I will pass them on to DD as I think she will like that you all know what it's like and how hard it is when the time comes.

I put up all the photos I've got of dear Brodikins on this computer on Flickr, including the ones taken years ago just after DD and SiL moved in together (they're the last 4 on the set). He was so big and broad then - his name came from what they named him at the shelter - Brodie, he's as wide as Brodie Avenue! :) He was a big cat back then!

We've been back to the lottie weeding again today! OH planted some cabbages and cauliflowers that our lottie partner was given and was kind enough to share with us. I've put up a set for the lottie (now up to 50 photos! ) on Flickr, but here's a nice pic of OH working hard as a taster!

Still shed a few tears today, but I know Brodie had a good life and lived with people who loved him. He only stayed with us on his holidays, but he was a good friend to me. Loved sleeping on our bed (not allowed on bed at home) and kept me company when I was bed bound, he really enjoyed company and was happy snuggling up and purred just to be close.

Rhiwfield - sorry about your chook. I had a maran cockerel a long time ago. Very handsome chap he was too. It's a shock sometimes when they just.....die.

Pine Marten at the fat balls in front of the shrubbery. I's moved the holder when it was getting raided by ginormas mice who were shinning up a tree to snaffle the contents.

I couldn't believe it appearing in broad daylight & getting it's paws in between the mesh & scooping it out onto the ground.....amazing. They are such killers too. I have a mysteriously injured hen. I did wonder if the marten had had a go, but it's very doubtful it would of survived that. The hen is now in isolation & a very small pen as it's not very ambulant. I do hope resting her & restricting her movements aid a recovery. I found her just gasping and laid on her side with quite a sire looking underside. I picked her up & put her in the big shed as the heat lamp is on over the chicks & it's quite cosy in there. It also gave her respite from the cockerel and the other girls incase they decided to peck her.....as they can. Her little heart was thumping. It was as if she was just about to croak. I'd heard a scuffuffle just a few moments before.

Today I had a hen down on a ledge from the first waterfall....what a carryon getting her out. She was wet. I wonder if she was just scratching away & fell over the edge - very odd. It's such a wonder I happened to see her. I think she was there all day.

Got her out only for Hamish to jump on her.....as they do. No finise, no flowers, no foreplay.....nuthin.

I'd be delighted to use pigs, FK. I don't know what's happened to me in the last two years since moving to the country, but I don't like the idea of spraying chemicals. It's not very scientific as I know there's no evidence glyphosate is harmful, but I'd rather not use it if I can avoid it. Is this the excuse to get those Mangalitzas....?

Oh yes fuzzy little things! They seemed relatively expensive to buy in prob because they are slower growing, so not really right for me, but I would love them just for the difference in meat, good for charcuterie and I want to make chorizo, my new favourite thing!

I also don't like chemicals, was taught in Uni to spray this with this and that with that, and these seeds/varieties are resistant to this spray... even don't think I'd even use glyphosate now. I look back and realise it's the petrochemical companies lining their pockets, along with the seed people - who are trying to ban our normal plant varieties so they can have complete monopoly!!!:mad:

Plus all these things seem really expensive, I've got better things to spend money on esp if a productive animal can do the job just as well or better than me!

Go for the pigs Rozzee, GO FOR IT! But be fully prepared, last thing you need is extra stress, they should be a fun escape from the madness. If I can help in any way let me know...?

Maggie, so sorry about your Brodie :grouphug: I have lots of pets in the hope that losing one will be less painful but it never is - although I don't mope as much because they pick up on it too :( I put on a brave face now.

LIR good that you're ok after what I can only imagine was a traumatic time, yes, true that people shouldn't be so afraid esp if it wasn't as bad as you thought.

I thought I'd put this pic up but obviously not...my latest acquisition from Devon, meet Winston:

Ferret keeper, I promise its not traumatic. I feel kind of seedy such is my zeal for the procedure, but I just keep telling everyone to have one ATM.

Its almost a shame we found nothing wrong that could be treated so simply while he was up there, but it was quite cool watching them do biopsies !

I'm raving about it in the hope someone remembers that mad woman who said it was ok, and gets one done without delay when they need it. I've been sitting on some of these symptoms for about eighteen months, partly because I felt pushed and pummelled around by everything else that's wrong with me....but compared to the endocrimologists and neurologists, I'll take a bum and guts doctor anytime! It's really painless and interesting.

    And it saves lives.

I was thinking, it's me is going to LOVE the weather coming up!

We're probably going to swim in the lagoon. DH is mega busy at work and cannot get any time off to enjoy the heat. He managed a Friday afternoon booked off at the end of the month and that's IT.
