funnily enough its "the tree house" that would be the biggest problem here in NFNP. even kids ones here have fell foul of the bigwigs...

I think peoe forget the practicalities like planning, insurance, dealing with DEFRA.

I think the other thing people forget is security. Often people are very vulnerable. I know that some of the alternative people in places we talked about on the first thread had had problems with security and I suppose what you'd call 'hate crime' against their lifestyle and I look at the number of minor security issues we've had over the years in different places.

It also goes back to that old drum I beat about welfare. I've seen some really bad animal welfare among some really well meaning people (both traditional and alternative) and that always makes me shrug and wonder why people cannot see it.

For me off grid would be nice, but never that basic. Compost loo yes, but year round hot water please! Oh god, please soon....) and somewhere to plug in a hair dryer (not that I use one but you know what I mean).

    Anyway.

I still cannot choose apples. Its like I have a block when it comes to choosing apple trees. Maybe its because they are my favourite fruit, or the most useful. Maybe its because they are so important, or that I am not meant to eat them now? I dunno. They won't be here this year now anyway, Which means all the 'premium' trees will be closest to the gate, Which is either better security because we can see them, or worse because they are easier to scrump. :rotfl:

It also means the apples will be in a paddock sometimes used me ponies, whoch is far from ideal. Never mind. I'll worry about apples next year.

Our old apples were MUCH better this year, so my hard pruning is working. :).

I'm impressed my the cider makers here, DH likes cider but I cannot stand the stuff. Our village hires a cider press for a collective, sadly its always on a busy weekend and we just haven't made it yet......maybe next year?

Or a friend of ours has bought a pub and microbrewery, I'm hoping to get some hops in for him next year and he might be inclined to make cider too.

I've not had many fruit wines I'd have again. There is a rose wine that's a very sweet desert wine which is....novel and ok, especially once every five years or so.:o.

I'd be more interested in making something stronger tbh, Not vodka. :rotfl:

Tree houses how trendy is that?

I think self sufficiency is a dream & not very realistic, but then again I'm not wanting to rain on anyone's parade. John Seymour's book is a must have for them. I don't know much about tree houses other than I wouldn't if it's a windy place or you get drunk and decide to step outside to look at the stars.....

Don't ask me about living in a caravan long term as I wouldn't advise it...The first four years aren't too bad.....even during two dreadfully cold Winters, after that it's all down hill on a metal tray.

    Hailing again.

Rhiwfield - The buying is the exciting bit - Hope the stuff flies off the shelves.

I'm off to a Soil Association day tomorrow - Muck, Grass management & summat else. I'll take me wellies, although going up the hill this morning looking for sheep I found I have a definite leak.

We are making brave plans for tomorrow, OH has dentist early in morning - fairly soon after 9am I think, but weather folks say dry day, so once he gets back we're off to lottie... Poor lottie has been neglected over family visits and OH's Mum's hospital trip and then it's rained a lot too! Will be good to get there, hopefully take down the last of the bean wigwams and then plant more onion sets and garlic. :j

If the rain stays off we might even begin to try and take out more of the nettles, and investigate how far the "patio" actually extends... There's a lot of carpet out there under the weeds and a layer of earth.:eek::eek: Now might be a good time to try explore what's there since the soil is wet - it was all rock hard when we first met the lottie!

Suspect we're in for a mud bath! :rotfl: I'm going to wear me wellies! ;)
  • Hello dreamers :) I don't want a tree house (had one as a kid, truely overrated and difficult to heat :D) (though I did make it age 11 from four planks and six inch nails so maybe...just me?)
I do live on a smallholding though, agree with the caravan living (40 odd years and counting, thank goodness for sheds to hold stash of..er..'things that will come in handy if i never need them')
Don't have animals (do cats count?)
Dislike 'T ministry, as my dad called them. They have never in my lifetime got ANYTHING right! (few months before they started charging for dumping rubbish they asked about fly tipping, they knew what was gonna happen!)
I like lots of hot water and chemical bubbles in my bath :D I can't afford solar panels or a windmill as much as I'd love to have them!
Our machinery is all pre 1970, and is politely called 'vintage'.
I like tree's:) and have about 8 different apples and 2 pears (no partridges), 4 plums and a couple of greengages.
We grow potatoes, carrots (badly), leeks (more weeds than food), celeriac, artichokes, squash, brassicas but mainly weeds.
And thats me :) hello :)
We live in happy poverty:) (and eat alot of veg!)

    Hello and welcome lovefullshelves.

Good to hear from you. :)

Poverty costs more than it used to, but the trick is being happy with it, which you seem to have mastered.

Did you say 40 years in a caravan?

Lovefullshelves, you sound like you'll fit right in. :)

Cats count, important pest control on a small holding.

Anyone who loves trees is, IMO, a good'un.
  • Morning all, thanks for all the congrats on the job front! I'm a bit nervous but I expect I'll be fine. And it'll be really good to do something different. The trouble with both of my last jobs is doing the same thing day in day out for two years gets pretty tedious. This sounds like far more variety because it's such a small company so I think I will flourish.

Have a great day all *hugs*

Oh and welcome to lovefullshelves, what a great name!

    Happy me now :j

    Wow!!
Well done, so pleased for you. It is not easy to get a job atm so you must be exceptional (but we already knew that ;))

Welcome lovefullshelves. My late Dad lived in a caravan with no running water for a few years and it was pretty grim. Very cold in the winter. He was taken into hospital and was discharged to find that the caravan had been emptied out of all his stuff. In some ways it was a good thing though as he was nominated by Suffolk MIND for a LA flat (they were only allowed one recommedation a year), and he lived there happily for many years. When he passed away I asked that donations be made to Suffolk MIND in his memory. Their kindness transformed his quality of life.

alfie 1 I can't believe how long your problem waterworks is dragging on. As you now have a pond could you go in for salmon farming???

rhiwfield - a motorised disco ball :rotfl::rotfl: very retro - with Christmas (sorry to mention the word in early November) parties coming up it should hopefully sell very well

    LIR - keep warm

thing is you have crossed over the " i buy what sells not what i like" fence... im only looking at the fence still :rotfl:

    Oh no I havent!!

Yesterday, bought a magnificent 54" wide pointe de rose bruges tapestry in great condition, Retour de chasse renaissance, Point de l'Halluin, (same as this) because it looked good :o.

The same cant be said for the sheep castrator

And the disco ball and light fittings that I'd bought were being half inched by another buyer until he was stopped by the lady supervisors. Oh, he said, thought they were all part of my lot!

    Thanks better days.

ATM th electric company are making a fortune from me.....the dogs (separate because of dog dogs season) mean two heaters on all the time) then the kitchen one is on all the time because I'm just not pushing it. Usually I'd be in the sitting room with the wood burner if cold but need to be near the the dogs and dog dog cannot come through the house ATM because of season so.......

Then while I like sleeping in a cold room this morning the room felt in need of a good airing, and the wind and dampness are driving from the wrong direction so I thought 'what the hell' and put a heater on low up there too. :). If nothing else the cats will be happy. :).
