We haven't used diatoms. We've only once had mites ( and if we have something we want to treat it with big guns). I would use them....but we don't have the need for a maintainence sort of thing.

I didn't want to mention the M word! I'm praying that swapping houses every year and doing the insides with liberal doses of solvent based treatment in between times will be enough. :o

Rozee, if your houses are painted prettily, you are using something wussy! :naughty: :rotfl:

I use diatoms too. I scattered a couple of tablespoonsful round the inside of the house (in the corners particularly and perch ends) and over the flooring. My chooks regularly go in there and turn all the wood shavings over so I figure it works similarly to a dust bath.

    choille what a pain:mad::mad::mad:

took me nearly and hour to put the scedules listings live, I have high expectations for one item I have listed... We would only find one design similar to it that had a BIN pirce and sold for £135, we have put a starting bid of £14.99 to tease peeps, and within minutes had a bid by an ebay that only deals in this type of thing...got loads of watchers allready..so just hopeing the gamble pays off, dont think it will get anywhere near the £135, but anything over £50 and I will be extremely happy:D

Really tired this morning, infact the last few days I just havent got the energy, really got to push myself to get off the sofa to do stuff...

    right better get to work

Had a reply back from the egg person. He says the pics on the Bay were eggs from the same hens, but they fade over the hen's lifetime. I know that can happen.

But then he goes on to say that his hens are a strain that produce more eggs than the really dark egg layers. Hmmmm...:( There are 'Marans' that produce more eggs, because they've had a bit of Plymouth Rock or similar introduced!

The holy grail of really dark eggs and prolific production doesn't exist, so I wasn't looking for it.

Anyway, these eggs will do for now. Knowing our luck, most will be cockerels, but if not, the hens will be judged against our Welsummers. There's always Hatherleigh Market..... ;)

Choille, I agree our eggs are cheap, but we have to sell at the local going rate. It's funny but our best customer comes from an active farming family and even they like to see variety in the egg colours (and the names of the hens which laid them! :rotfl:) Pete's wife also returned to keeping hens after having some of our eggs, though they 'inherited' more shortly after that too + the guinea fowl. (Someone died on a holding nearby.:()

Hope you perk up soon CTC.

I've been listing more items as BINs or BIN/BO and getting some really good prices. Briefly stopped doing new listings so we can have a short break, then its back to buying new stock nx week.

    Choille, so annoying!

Just noticed that our log supplier has increased prices by £30 pcm  So I've put in an order for three truck loads elsewhere, got my doubts about how well seasoned it will be but its under half price so we'll wait and see. And its time to top up the oil again.

EDIT: Wow CTC!! They've certainly got the look!! Here's hoping £100+!

Dave, do you have egg wars in your neck of the woods as well ? :D
    Snippets, from local website:

    • Shocked! Bought 6 eggs this afternoon at ### village shop - £2.05! Not free range, not local, just bog standard. Only got them as I was cut short - never again.
    • I highly recommend Pool farm for eggs, free range, laid daily, beautifully fresh and just £1.60 for a dozen. It's worth my petrol to drive down to St. Brides Major, for quality and value for money. Plus much better to shop at a local farm than buy warehouse bought battery farm eggs.
    • Just price checked today in ##### major village shop, regular eggs £1.60, free range £1.80.
    • Oh & the farm eggs are £2.60/dozen, £1.30 half dozen.
    • is that the place opposite the Farmers Arms
    • It is yes,####
    • It's a shame you recommended a farm whilst bad- mouthing another. I didn't think that sort of publicity was acceptable on the ########### Made uncomfortable reading for me.
    • I recomend our Tynycaia farm free range eggs laid fresh everyday available from the deli in cowbridge , llandow caravan park , the farm ,or myself at the farmers market can't see an egg post and not comment
    • Strawberry fields have free range duck and goose eggs x
    • I don't believe i did bad mouth anyone, i am merely shocked at the price of eggs I paid. Freedom of speech & all that
    • Local sourced foods vs factory farmed was her point. There is a farmer in the US state of Wisconsin threatened with jail for selling his milk through a buying cooperative because big food and the state government want to shut these local options down. We've been covering it for a month now on @WorldViewShow and so I think ###### is right to call out non-locally produced eggs.
    • Coffee wars, egg wars....got to celebrate the fact that we're talking about local and food issues - even if sometimes going off message! From a moderation point of view agree with #### observation thats its principally a local vs battery argument, but #### yes ### posting guidelines do request that individual businesses are not named and negatively commented on - its against the spirit and ethos of what the ### is about. Its a hard line to find sometimes - anyone want to join the moderation team?!! I'm going to #### urban chicken keeping course for a potential solution - see if there's room in my back garden! http://coedforestgarden.co.uk/ai1ec_event/introduction-to-urban-chicken-keeping/?instance_id
    • Perhaps the #### Local Shop might be able to sell locally laid eggs instead. Price need not be the issue, really, if we are committed to supporting local producers.
    • And just because one arrives at the till before discovering the price of something, it doesn't follow that one has to complete a purchase. One can always say 'No, Thank you'.
    • Everyone is welcome at Llandow Caravan Park & Storage to buy Chloe's local Eggs from Tynycaia Farm in Llandow. They are lovely! Our shop is open from 9am til 8pm - 7 days a week!
    • Ethical choices versus eco-friendly shopping. Excellent debate, since most of us choose on price...

For some reason that puts me in mind of the people who buy, for example, fruit & veg from a supermarket & then flog it on at Farmer's Markets at inflated prices.
