So midgied & wet here. Out doors a no go.
Have you tried the Avon stuff against the midges, LIR? it's worked a treat for us in the past. Hate midges.

We have just got the roofers back..................

The Avon stuff works if there;s a few. West coast Highland midgies are another experience all together, especially at this time of year.

Just been figuring out height of finial so that can go up. They brought the other Veluxs we ordered as I want more light in the office upstairs - means cutting the roof, but easier now than later. I'm a bit fed up with the way they've left us for weeks & then roll up .................................

Back from Sheffield after a week away sorting out the tenants. As usual, I'm playing catch up with your posts.

Lots of interesting discussion about long term planning. We have most of our investments in property. They are illiquid investments, but at least we're getting a "liveable" income from them. However, that's mainly because we don't live a "normal" life: no holidays, secondhand clothes, shopping only for food, low on the gadgets and expensive consumer items. Unless you can eat it or grow it or it produces something, I don't like to buy anything that depreciates in value, like CTC says, unless I'm going to be able to use it for the next ten to twenty years (most of my clothes are that old). We hope to be able to live here at least until the children leave full time education. We'll be in our sixties then. If we don't sell the properties in the city, we can always sell this place then and move back to the city. The remaining properties can still be let out. Or sell up everything and rent! I have a pension fund from the days when I was a lawyer, but it isn't going to provide much money by then. I have to agree that whilst we could have invested in holiday lets, rather than long term lets, they didn't look that attractive to me. With long term lets in good areas near hospitals and universities, you are always going to be able to let them out with regular monthly incomes (albeit less), tenant changeovers yearly or fewer and less wear and tear. The tax breaks that accompanied holiday lets have now gone too.

On to brighter thoughts: I have gone a bit egg crazy and have twelve Brahma eggs in a friend's incubator. These are big birds and I'm not wondering how they fit into my strategy - except they're adorable :)

CTC, I have strawberry runners, but I've not had time to do anything with them yet and I'm amazed if they're alive. I'll try to make time to salvage some this week.
