I'm the poor wee woman who swills out the holidoid lets & believe me I could tell you all a few tales that would raise the hairs on the back of your neck, but I aim to do a cheap, eco, rough-it let once the house is livable...........0

Dave, so sorry to hear about Daisy but you know you've done the right thing. Lovely pic of her in the bag!
Rozee I hope DS's elbow soon knits together. They do heal quickly when they're young, thankfully.
Anyone that needs a hug, here you go:grouphug:
I've been up since 04:30. I woke up at 03:45 and went to the bathroom, then couldn't get back to sleep. Now I'm tired and sleepy. What's with that?? I daren't go back to bed because I doubt I'll wake up until 10 :rotfl:I start work at 8..."...And if it don't feel good, what are you doing it for?" - Robbie Williams - 'Candy'0 -

Don't imagine that because we owned them we didn't also do all the work ourselves for several years, choille.
That's one thing I can never understand with some of the bigger holiday complexes. If one has £1m+ why on earth would one want to spend life running s/c? One can buy a nice place for less than that & not have all the hassle.0 -

We looked at a property high in the Aeron valley where the lady had a separate bunk house that slept 16. She traded with the French, and maybe other Europeans.
When I noted that the bunk house was pretty basic, she said her clients liked it that way to keep their costs low. She liked it because there was no $rsing around providing facilities to meet the Welsh Tourist Board star criteria.
She'd just finished a week with a party of Breton farmers, though what the hell 15 Frenchmen would do in the middle of nowhere is probably best left to the imagination......:rotfl:
And there again......! :eek::eek:0 -

I'd agree with this. Too much hassle entirely.
Still, with inflation eroding savings, having an income source that rises with inflation may be the difference between living comfortably and genteel poverty.
Economics atm favour those in debt (low interest rates and inflation eating away at balance) so borrowing to let is, in the short term, likely to enhance cash flow. Of course when the inevitable correction to interest rates occur, businesses built on debt will suffer.0 -

Yes, having Tourist Board accreditation is expensive but is a two-edged sword. It also gives owners & visitors some sort of guarantee/ redress plus many brochures now require owners to have accreditation before they will touch them. No point running a business one can't advertise in the publications which produce most business.
There's also the old but true rule that if visitors don't think the owners care enough to provide decent accommodation then the visitors won't treat it well. The vast majority of the time if provided with something nice they will treat it with more respect.
Having said that, the industry reckons that every owner should expect one bad apple per property per year. Luckily we never had anything like that.
Very true, rhiw.......depending on whether they want to live on site & whether they need/can get a mortgage
That's why ordinary BTL (for residential use) has gone mad but I think it will all end in tears for a great many landlords who don't know what they're doing & who are only in it to make money & not also to provide a decent service.0 -
Visited Rosemoor yesterday en-route to Lidl, where we saw they were growing Shark's Tooth Melons over a pergola. The gardener nearby seemed a bit surprised that we knew what they were.
They're behind the curve; they should be on Yacon this year and perhaps trialling some of the different Oca. Personally, I'm prepared to be disappointed again by Oca's productivity, but at least it's had a fair trial inside the poly this time. As for the Yacon, it's way taller than me now, so if what's under the ground mirrors the visible bit, I may have problems harvesting it! :rotfl:
There were some very impressive sweet peppers being grown outdoors there, all planted on 8th March. Interestingly, the F1 varieties weren't ahead of the others, and their F1 Redskin peppers were as puny and thin-skinned as mine were when I last grew them. Blowed if I know why that has an AGM!
I'm drying out the peas for you CTC, and I'll get a photo of the Marshmallow now that it's started to flower, to see if it's the one choille wants.
Some of the apples are ready. Not the best ones, but anything's welcome.
This morning a dear friend turned up with 8 or 9 trees for our planned woodland, all of them seedlings from her garden. One was a Populus tremula, the silver leafed poplar that grows fast and needs keeping from people's drains. I was going to plant one of those at the other end of the field, so that was a nice bonus! :j0 -
