People wonder why this country is in the state it's in. A CHILD is abused racially on a bus and there's actually people thinking her being bothered by this is an over reaction. Safety in numbers only works when the 'numbers' give a crap.

Imagine how you'd feel if your child was on the bus and was abused by a drunk idiot and not one person tried to help? Suppose everyone saying its an over reaction would be absolutely fine with that.

Yes, I think mentioning it to the driver would have been a good idea. Especially as these are 2 kids, not even adults yet. Doing nothing and pretending it's not happening is taking the easy way.

One of DH's students was on the train coming into a school a few days after the Woolwich murders. She was verbally abused by a middle-aged woman for covering her head. Typical nasty comments like 'Bet you've got a bomb in your schoolbag,' 'Go back to your own country' etc. Two more passengers sided with the abuser, and nobody confronted them. Poor lass was on her way into school for an exam; she was shaking when she arrived. I don't think I could sit quietly if I witnessed something like that.

Because of my child's family background, name and cultural mix, its entirely possible she could, at some point, be racially abused on a bus by a drunken idiot. And the advice I have already given her regarding bus journeys is exactly what I said to the OP in my first post on this thread.

Maybe the other passengers on the bus thought you were handling the situation in the right way by ignoring the man and not reacting to him, and thought that if they stepped in they risked provoking him and making things worse.

If it happens again (I really hope it doesn't) move closer to the driver & try to speak to the driver, I have been on buses which have pulled over and the police have come to remove an idiot. None of us should have to share a bus with scum like this and the police are equipped to deal with it, general public aren't.

You both handled this very well. Sorry it happened to you, but you're worth more than a drunken hate-filled moron, so try not to let him upset you.
Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.

I would make sure the child was safe, but I would do that by keeping an eye on the situation and/ or inviting them to sit with me. As distressing as verbal abuse is, physical harm is even more so, and for this reason I would not seek to provoke the abuser, which any retort is likely to do.

Think i'd of told him to shut the _ up, and hoped to get a reaction. He's hammered, obviously, let him kick off, then i'll throw him off the bus myself.

First of all, people need to learn they aren't made of straw, just because they think they're weak and these people are strong, doesnt mean its true.

And if someone else got hurt in the meantime? It is not about being 'weak', it is about keeping a level head and not making things ten times worse.
