To me sloppy seemed to be a regular user who got hacked off with the cliquey-ness of some boards. Sorry if I am wrong but he seemed to direct hit on chat threads with lots of regular users. These threads would not generally attract newbies (meaning they were not threads imparting actual information) he seemed to be stirring up a bunch of mates. I felt S-S was fairly harmless-in the sense he was trying to get a rise. Is this a 'troll', or are 'trolls' the vindictive posts on personal threads which attack people and their circumstances?
I am sure you will claim that this is what S_S was doing, but I reserve the right to disagree and feel that our friend sloppy was being mischeivious.

I am not saying it is good to frighten newbies off at all, but just trying to get some perspective.

A troll to me is a person who enters a discusion with the sole aim to disrupt that discusion, maybe this is a bit broad but thats my view

as for sloppy i always thought of an adolescent doing somthing simaler to your
    When my sisters thread myself

Sloppy is definitely similar to an adolescent, even though he claimed to be a woman in her fifties! :D

I take southernscouser and Neko Zombies' point about not providing "oxygen to feed the flames" and either ignoring the comments or simply walking away and that works for some people; they're either thick skinned enough for the comments to not bother them or they have the mental discipline to just walk away.

Just coz I preach it doesn't mean I practice it! :p;) :rotfl:

It's an akward one and I'm only speculating coz I never saw the thread in question but I imagine the abuse got worse because people responded to it.

Everyone needs to (and does) consider the effect their replies may have when posting to someone who is in desperate need of help. The same needs to apply when posting to flamers/trolls/ae's/numptys etc.

In fact, and it's no criticism to anyone who has posted on here, look what this !!!!!! has done. It's got people questioning the way this [STRIKE]board[/STRIKE] sanctuary is run. Why do we give them such power? :undecided

Thanks rich and neko that sums up the reason for this thread is this too 'open' for the sensetive nature of the content and should it not be monitered more because of it after all Martin claims to be aware of its sensativaty

My fear is that if it can't/won't work in it's current form then it's safer for the board not to be there at all.

On the gambling loopholes board a couple of months ago some people thought they had found a massive loophole on a betting website. It basically meant they were betting money that they were relying on from future 'guranteed' winnings. This resulted in them losing tens of thousands of pounds!

The gambling loopholes board was taken down while pure panic set in. Luckily for those who were facing real !!!!!! the website took repsonsibilty for the flaw in their site (which shouldn't have allowed it to happen). People still lost the cash what they had in their accounts which could of been a couple of grand but they got off lightly.

Anyways I know I'm rambling so I'll try and get to the point. The board was very close to being removed despite people having made hundreds of thousands from it because of the risk to a few who didn't read the rules properly.

I know it's a different scenario but what I'm trying to get at is the site cannot maintain a fulltime people to run a board as such. If it is putting innocent people at risk, my own feelings from previous experience is that Martin would rather the board be pulled.

You have to decide whether that is what you want or whether as individuals we should act more repsonsibly and ignore and report flamatory posts. I wouldn't like to see this board go as it is a lifeline to people. I don't think anyone outside of our boards appreciates how much it actually does for people. Sure it's great to get a free packet of condoms every now and then and a tenner of your holiday but this is the heart and soul of this site.

Again I'm rambling. If anyone feels upto sub-editing it to make sense please go ahead! :rotfl:

The fact is, we can sit here all day agreeing that the best way to deal with a problem poster is to ignore them. The trouble is this never happens in the heat of it all. Over the past year I have seen countless threads turn into a riot, and lots of trolls have come and gone. For every heated thread there is a discussion just like this one. Of course we all agree that we shouldn't respond, lots of people actually put 'I know I shouldn't respond, but' in their post. But there will always be people who bite, that's human nature.

I still maintain the best way is just to get the nonsense deleted quickly. That way it will be gone before people get the chance to bite back.

Ok, so rather than just being all talk about the need for more moderation I have sent a message offering to help out on this board. As I am not and have not been bankrupt some of you might thing that's a bad idea, if so, please say so.

I think some other people here would be really helpful mods, and, rather than name names, because only they know what they can offer and cope with, it would be better if people just take it upon themselves to offer to moderate.

I've done the same, Toto. I'd hate to see this board disappear when so many people clearly need help. :)
