Sorry, I disagree with you here. A troll is an accepted term; as a noun synonymous with flamebait. As a verb, to post controversial or provocative messages in a deliberate attempt to provoke flames.

IMHO, nothing flammatory about that definition. The fact of it is, this board has been subjecting to trolling (sloppy comes to mind). I'm not sure how denying that is helpful, particularly when people are actively calling for more moderation.

Perhaps that is so. Maybe I am a forum virgin. I never came across it as an 'accepted' term, I have only read it in posts and if I am honest with you, I found it extremely derogatory. I know that that is the intention, but posts that refer to 'them' and 'trolls' i feel are very flamatory. I am not denying that people who seek to provoke flames don't exist, I am suggesting that the fire is further fed with these derogatory comments.
I don't think that persecution is fair at all. I think the AlanD thread should have been removed far quicker, but unless the forum is removed to an entirely different location I don't see how you can avoid it completely.
I also think that there are some people who love the so called 'trolls', indeed they invent their own alter-ego's to do this very deed. Many people enjoy this banter. The problem is it goes too far.

If there's a website dedicated to people feeling suicidal, and I'm sure there is, The Samaritans for one, then I'm sure the management of that site would be quick to dispel comments that were disparaging and hurtful and exclude the individuals from the site.

I take southernscouser and Neko Zombies' point about not providing "oxygen to feed the flames" and either ignoring the comments or simply walking away and that works for some people; they're either thick skinned enough for the comments to not bother them or they have the mental discipline to just walk away.

The only thing that worries me about that approach is that on occasions people visit this site, exhausted from the continual stress and aggravation of a hopeless financial situation, and let's not forget there are approximately 1000 people commit suicide every year from debt related problems, and I really don't think they should be subject to the ridicule and hostility that's been evident on this forum over the last few days.

By comparison to the DFW Board this is a relatively small Board and an offensive Thread or Post stays on the front page for a lot longer than a similar Post or Thread would on the DFW Board. I only refer to the DFW Board because there are far more similarities between us than there are differences. The DFW has far more regular posters who are experienced, articulate and willing to give any inflammatory comments the treatment they so richly deserve; they can be drowned by weight of sheer numbers and collective spirit.

That is not the case on this Board; it is much smaller and has a much higher percentage of vulnerable users and much lower percentage of experienced members who have the time or the inclination to respond.

For this reason, I do support a more active moderation of the Board before the tabloids are able to "expose" a debt related suicide as being the result of one final desperate attempt to find support and advice on Martin Lewis's website and instead recieved only ridicule and abuse.

Well said! Rather than expect the mods to jump on everything and in effect be 'think police', we should be able to manage things ourselves. Shame you can't find the thread (though it may have been pulled); I'm sure it would be have been useful and illustrates the point perfectly.

Fair Point Rich; I know you care about this issue.

As has been said on the other thread, this is an internet forum; there will always be disagreements; if you are that emotionally fragile perhaps this is not the place to get advice. That said, the board is immensley important in terms of providing support to those going through the process, and it really would be a shame for that to be lost. Regarding the thread I saw yesterday; I agree that was disgraceful, particularly because it was ages before it was pulled. In that sense, yes we need more moderation.

For some reason sloppy has never replied to any direct question that I have asked him/her.

I think that sloppy_saver is a regular users alias. I don't think they are a true 'troll'-unless that is what one is. I think that some regulars get annoyed by others and feel the need to stir them up.

    Not sure what you mean.

Sloppy is exactly what would be described as a troll. The fact that he has several other usernames; sloppy_saver, Sloppysaver, and that all of his posts are derogatory or include the words 'dumbass' show he is up to no good.
