blind-as-a-bat, do you get about on here, like wot I do? :rotfl:

I saw the attack on AlanD and I think it was awful, but I've seen just as bad and worse on other boards, even on Old Style once  That wasn't one person causing trouble, it was a load of regulars ganging up on another regular. It does calm down after a couple of days though.

It would be nice to have someone around all the time who can delete abuse as soon as it happens, but I just can't see it happening :(

I think we are missing the point a little. I do know that the other boards all have their issues, trolls and arguments. However, this board is special and different. The mental state of someone going into the arms or into grabbit etc is going to be very different from the mental state of someone coming onto a bankruptcy board.

People come here at rock bottom, I know, 9 years ago a close friend hung himself because of his debt issues. He was trying to sort things out, he had written all of the letters and was trying his best to find another job. One stupid little thing pushed him over the edge of his stairway with a belt around his neck. That stupid little thing was his fridge freezer breaking down. He had just done his weekly shop and had lost all of his food.

Now, to you and I that's silly, he could have visited friends and no doubt he would have had a spare fridge/freezer given to him and enough food to last a month. But, it was the last final straw which pushed him from just about holding on, to seeing no hope and no way out.

How many people like my friend dave are lurking here looking for hope? I can't say, but even if there is one or two, I think we owe it to them to take whatever measures we can to make this the one safe moderated board on this website.

Ok, I think I'm up to speed.

First off, I agree that the post was disgraceful.

Secondly, I've no qualms about using the word 'troll' if someone clearly is being one. I think we all know who is doing what and why. It's not offensive.

It is a recognised term, not just something people made up to throw at someone they don't like.

Thirdly, having more mods/BG won't change a thing. They have limited powers and rightly so. I agree with them being able to lock a thread but nothing more - I don't like the idea of deleting threads full-stop as it only leads to futher spin-off posts and questions and arguments.

I like to see ALL posts, good and bad. That way you know who to avoid!

And lastly, I don't like being told I shouldn't reply to trolls or trolling threads. I see the logic but in my opinion, a well thought out, mature reply causes no harm. Ignoring it is as good as condoning it.

If I'd ignored AlanD's thread and let people slag Mike St Helens and AlanD off without saying anything, I'd have been very disappointed in myself. 2 great blokes who didn't deserve the criticisims and who deserved some support.

But the same could be said for the Benefits board or for the main DFW or for someone on the utilities. Who are we to say which board houses more vulnerable people? I think we are on dangerous ground. I cannot see Martin altering the whole policing of this site because one board feels it could benefit the most from extra 'protection.

I respectfully disagree, people are usually not walking a tight rope between hope and suicide on a utilities board. Most people who come onto this board are not walking that line either but there may be one or two, if they will be anywhere they will be here.

You don't think those on the benefits board may be walking that fine line? I disagree totally. Living on benefits is for the most part miserable and a meagre existence. I can say for myself that I've felt very down and depressed on many an occassion from that very situation alone. Debt problems aside.

I'm saying that you cannot start creating certain rules for certain forums. That in itself would a) create more work and b) create anonmousity between our board and others. Which is the last thing we need.

But won't the whole of MSE need moderating if one board does.

I mean the arguments and flaming are much more regular in discussion time and on the amrs board than anywhere else!

Sorry if it sounds like I'm dismissing your suggestions, I'm not. Just trying to look at it pratically. :)

    SS,

Apologies but If I didn't pick you up on that one you'd think I'd gone all "touchy feely" (and there's nothing wrong with that he hastened to add)

Is it prats that look at things pratically? :rotfl: :rotfl:

    tru,

I agree to some extent, the only difference is that some of the people who visit this part of the forum are facing what they see as intractable problems; that state of mind can have ugly consequences.

You're not going to get somebody "leaping off a cliff" just because they've been criticised for using the wrong batter mix.

Hi Bakey - I don't think anyone wants to create different rules for the Bankruptcy Board.
I, like you, can usually give back everything that the 'trolls' dish out, but there are some posters who are frightened away from these boards by the vitriolic comments of these 'people' and may never reap the benefits that regular posting can bring.
As I understand it, a majority seem to feel that this particular board has less 'board guide' input than some of the other boards, and that, to have a specific board guide for 'Bankruptcy and Living with it' would help to reduce these unwelcome and unsolicited attacks by posters who, otherwise, have no interest in these boards.
    Cheers.
