    What about pedestrians?

    And pedestrians.

They tend to be the easiest to spot.

Oh seriously, you really must be a BMW driver.

Hey steady on, I'm on my third BMW and am fastidious about signalling and courteousness, we're not all bad.

I have to say though that since moving from an Alfa 156 to a BMW 5-Series people seem to have a look of confusion and bewilderment about them when I let them out...

I make a conscious decision not to indicate, rather than a conscious decision to do so.

So, if I'm not sure, on go the flashers. Which means they're used most of the time, unless I'm approaching some country junction where I can see for yards around and there are no other cars, bikes etc.

I think this is what the alleged BMW driver was referring to, which is how the DSA expect you to use your indicators. If there's clearly no pedestrians, cyclists, motor cyclists, cars, lorries, or any other form of other road user who can see your car, the correct action is to not indicate, unless there is possibility of a vehicle coming into view during the time you'll take to make your maneuver.

You can get marked down on your test for repeated unnecessary signalling.

    Seriously mate get a grip.

Like I said previously you've no clue about my driving style at all yet you think you know exactly how I drive? :rotfl: Get real you muppet.

True..can only comment on what you post.

Not that it is of concern to me.
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

Well obviously they don't drive such that they have to slam their brakes on all the time, but occasionally something completely unexpected will happen and they will have to.

In which case, the driver has failed to exercise the level of attention they should be exercising......?

    It ain't difficult.

Someone pulling out in front of you when turning right (AND INDICATING) on a roundabout, giving barely four feet of space, it one such instance where scanning the road can't tell you whether someone ELSE will ignore what's going on and force you to slam your brakes on save leaving a lovely dent in the side of their car and possibly face...

Never had a real problem with these...not for the past 47 years, anyway...

but then, I haven't been hit by a passing asteroid, either.

The ability to cope comfortably with the excesses of others depends on one's level of awareness of others.

No, not if the driver has x-ray vision and can see through brick walls, so can spot the loony cyclist haring down the alleyway.

I'll stick to indicating, thanks. I want to keep my 25 years no-claims.

if you leave enough space between you and the car in front it will not be so much of a problem BUT of course people should indicate
Blackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool

  • That`s a good point , John . But as a rider since 1970 and a driver a couple of years later - I`ve seen not only the roads deteriorate , but the standards of drivers on them . The thing is , with no indication , a second of delay @ 1 roundabout will backlog to 5 or more minutes across an average town - just like rubbernecking on a M-way causes a dead stop some miles back ;) Had to use hand signals on my motorcycle in `70 , no helmet and a fag on :D

It also has a lot to do with where one drives.

I have never come across these issues in Exeter, only one crazy roundabout in Taunton, which seems to mirror the driving style around the Arch de Triomphe.

It's perfectly straightforward to handle, as you say, you just have to have your wits about you. Unfortunately not all other road users do...
