is trusteer rapport installed or not?
and if it is, have you uninstalled it, yet?
nothing you've posted sofar suggests a new machine or any spending whatsoever (including going to a repair shop) is required to fix this, quite the opposite.!!

Isn't RAPPORT supposed to protect you from terrorist action, murders, aids, sore throats, biting insects, fire, floods, football hooligans, power failures and viruses ?
Why would anyone want to install such a brilliantly conceived program on their personal computer in the first place ?
Don't tell me - their bank advised them to.....??
incidentally Rapport (if installed) is not simple to uninstall (I was advised by Nationwide to use it a few years ago) - you need an "uninstaller" to remove it - available (surprisingly, for very little money) from your bank !!
Oh heck!
I uninstalled it from someone's laptop last Friday and 'forgot' to pay the bank.:D
Seriously, take your appropriate link from
http://www.trusteer.com/support/uninstalling-rapport
I've not been able to find any traces on several machines after uninstalling.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
It seem the best option is to do as 21Twinkle has suggest, backup any files/data you want to keep and do a complete reinstall.
Did we find out what OS the OP is running?
Downloading the correct ISO and using your OWN product key should work with Vista and Windows 7 Pro/ultimate.
XP is more of a problem, and if you have it you might want to consider buy a new OS, if you can't find the correct disc/iso. It's not impossible to sort out, but not ideal for a novice.
If you want to check if the laptop hardware is ok and can't find an OS you could try installing Windows 8 Evaluation. Link for a Enterprise Evaluation version below. Use this for testing/evaluation only.

As for all the generalisation of laptop brands hardware, you should ignore them as all brands have good and bad builds. If you did go for a new laptop check out specific reviews before you buy. Comments like "avoid Sony - they are overpriced rubbish" are way too generalised.0 -
Who said anything about Trusteer Rapport being installed in the first place ?
Not the OP - It was someone else jumping to conclusions.....
I very much doubt whether :
a. Trusteer was installed in the first place
b. Trusteer was responsible for killing the PC
c. Even if Trusteer was installed - that it can now be removed to save the PC (I think that the OP has already decided to replace it with a shiny new laptop)0 -
What about the Service Tag? I requested that information on the 14th...it's now the 20th.0

When you say "Service tag" - What, exactly do you mean
Do you mean Dell laptop ID tags
Do you mean Windows product key
I have been in IT for over 20 years and I am confused - so the OP must be too....0 -

I did. It was a (still unanswered) question, possibly a pertinent question, not an assumption or a conclusion, unlike many of your points. How is this user supposed to post a log - when they can't even access the C: drive
Sorry - but please read the previous posts !!Managed to start the computer in safe mode but have no idea what to do next?
Perhaps the op will come back and answer the questions, so we can progress the issue, rather than scrabbling around in the dark with random conclusions and suggestions that a new pc is required, when it probably isn't. If they haven't popped off to pc world or Tesco already as a result of poor advice.!!

21Twinkle, I've had no luck at all despite following your advice, all I get is the blue screen. I think it is porbably time to go shopping and get a laptop.
As I said before I'm not great with all the technical stuff. I've got no idea how to reinstall anything and have no clue where my Windows XP disc is.
Thanks for all the help it has been much appreciated.0 -
Are you only going to respond to one contributor to your thread, or are we on ignore?
Last try.

IF IT IS, Go into safe mode, control panel, add/remove programs, and uninstall it, then reboot
