:rotfl: that is a much better take on impulse spending! :rotfl: think i was feeling a bit 'deep & meaningful' last night, which usually translates in to 'hormonal & full of S@*t!' :rotfl:

just joined this board and trying to find my way round. I am interested in trying to budget as I always fail. I allow £50 per week for the two of us but have to dip into other cash on many occasions. I do buy things that I never eat (what a waste) and spend a lot on fruit as hubby takes about five pieces to work each day. I shall start my budget beg of July and cut down by £10 per week to start with and work from there. Is it better to stock up on meat etc monthly or just to buy weekly.

    Hi Irishwexford,

I think that buying in bulk is always a time and money saver, (buying meat would mean you'd have to have the space in the freezer).

For me, as I've just joined, the trick is being organised so you don't waste. Have yet to put this wisdom into practice - watch this space.

    Nova :D
  • I think I will try and plan my meals to start with. Must stop throwing food out. I lead a very busy life and try not to spend too much time in the kitchen but its the only way to eat well and save. Anyway will be watching this board with interest and will post when I start in July

Though it feels late in the game, I'm going to join this month.
Have done the challenge before, but guess I've felt rich and let things slide.

I'm going for £250 for the month for 3 adults, 4 children and a flat coat.
I got a £20 off if you spend over £150 code from tescos, so I did a big shop at the beginning of the month.
I've spent about £204, but should just have to get fruit and veg for the rest of the month and maybe milk and bread in the last couple of weeks.....

I also buy my meat from a butcher. I bought half a lamb, half a pig and a load of beef in April, that I'm still working through. Should do the month easily..

I kept all my receipts for the first month and it was a real eye opener! That gave me some ideas of where I could cut down, and also was a pointer to how much food I was wasting. Still not got that right, but working on it. I still keep all receipts for my budgeting.

I shop just once a week, that cuts down on temptation a bit. The best thing for me was weekly meal planning and then shopping for only what I needed. I still struggle with this sometimes, I have a 'siege' mentality! :D
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

    Morning all,

Well, I'm very excited as today I'm going to Asda - hooray! I do need to get out more  Once DD is at pre-school - it's better if she's not there to hang off my arm saying 'Mummy, I really neeeeed this, I do, I do...'.

I have a list: Lettuce, tomatoes, bag onions, carrots, ham, brown sliced and pitta bread, eggs, milk and toilet roll.

I am only taking £10 with me and leaving debit and credit card at home - hope I don't get to the checkout and have to put things back :o

Let you know how I get on.

Ha! This is what I struggle with. I feel much happier if I've got at least one, unopened 'spare' of everything we use. Running out of stuff is a cardinal sin that I'm just going to have to learn to live with - all that money tied up in 'stock' in my cupboards and cellar... it would be much better being paid off my mortgage.

Nova5 - re your comment about having to put stuff back at the checkout, I was a bit concerned about this... I'm going shopping on Friday and, when I started my list yesterday (after I planned my meals, like a good girl :D ) I was interested to know how much of my budget was gone so far. So I went on MySupermarket.com and made as if I was doing an online shop. When I'd done, I knew how much I'd 'spent' on my list so far and which supermarket was the best place to go.

    Ond oooohhhh.... isn't Ocado expensive!

And I forgot to say - went shopping on Tuesday - budget was £37.50 and I spent £34.33. It's the first time I've ever been shopping and restricted the amount I want to spend, so I was very pleased with myself.
