DS came over for breakfast this morning so had to make a trip to Asda, as he requires a big fry-up. Got meat for sandwiches for work, should last the week, and a few veggies for weekly dinners, and a newspaper. Used £4.00 luncheon vouchers so paid £6.58 all in. They wouldnt take my other moc,s , should have known not to use self scan, came up non-matched item. Can this be the end of my moc endevours, will try just to use checkout in future. Should I put my leftover money from last week into a seperate tin or something ?

Ok been reading the grocery challenge for a while now. We have cut down alot in the last month or so and I am going back to cooking everything from scratch as due to go on maternity leave at the end of Aug with baba no 3. Want to use everypenny I can to save for the baby and also clear as much debt as possible this year so want to go low with the spending. However having read this thread I don't want to go for a level we won't hit so gonna try for around £250 a month for me and dh and the 2 kids. Aiming for £50 per week plus a fall back £50. Petrol is a separate budget so this is just grocery. Wish me luck lol.

I'd start with what you're already spending, and then reduce it by, say, a tenner a week.

    Hi

I'll try this as well this month. I'll aim for £350 per month for 2 adults and 2 kids.

I've spent £25.97 at Mr Ts today and £33 from the meat van.

I had 5 chickens, a big bag of sausages, a lamb joint, about a dozen lamb chops, and about 15 packs of bacon!

So the meat will last me more than one month!

I'll see how I get on because I don't know exactly how much I spend each month but I know I spend more than I should.

Ive decided that once we have used up the freezer, I would like to buy more fresh/local meat and just buy a week at a time with my mealplan:confused: ...the older generation used to buy their food for one day at a time and go daily to the butchers, greengrocers, bakers and milk from milkman.

TBH though, the food in my freezer are products that have been vastly reduced and I tend to work my mealplans around my reductions, but the good reductions are more scarce to what they used to be.

    What do you guys think?

Ah the good old days! I well remember back in the mid to late 30's Mummy taking me up the high street daily visits to the butcher, grocer greengrocer etc. We had daily deliveries of milk and bread from horse drawn carts (Father used to pop out as and when to shovel up the deposits). This sort of shopping continued through married life until the rise and rise of the Supermarket (yuk). Now, in our area, there are no butchers or greengrocers to buy fresh meat and vegetables from. We do have a convenience store nearby but their prices are not that convenient. For instance they sell 1Ltr bottles of milk for 67p whereas Mr T sell 2Pint bottles for 65p.

I and DW bemoan the lack of choice but of course it is partly our fault for giving our custom to the all pervasive Supermarkets.
