However, we have kept a £100 with our mortgage providers to keep it open and also look after the deeds all free of charge so if the worst case scenario happened I could always ask them for a loan!!!!

Good to have your existing mortgage lender as a potential backstop for a further advance.

As to title deeds: I believe you don't need anyone holding paper deeds these days - the land registry has everything online. Worth checking what they have on record for you. http://www.landregistry.gov.uk/public/faqs/how-can-i-prove-that-i-own-a-particular-property

Indeed, £4 will tell you everything about any house. It's always worthwhile keeping a certain amount back from them until expiry of your mortgage, just in case, but paper deeds are now history in most cases.

Once your mortgage is paid off, you'll probably be charged for transfer of ownership by the land registry.

savetilibleed: Still nothing showing and it's been a week since I first applied (they said I should hear within 3 to 5 working days). It would appear that their online application process is very unreliable as those who have opened over the 'phone have had accounts appear pretty rapidly.

10_66: Many thanks for the update. Strange that you were told it was through, but you don't see it online, nor, presumably, anything by post?

with me they cancelled the 2nd/3rd online applications as they thoght these were "done in error". Applied on the phone for 2nd/3rd, and no problem

savetilibleed: I've had absolutely nothing, I'm not even sure if the application's been successful, if it hasn't then that would explain why nothing's appeared online, but surely they should've sent out a letter declining the application. I certainly wouldn't bother trying to open online with them again, I'd do it over the 'phone.

savetilibleed: Right, rang them and they said the application just hadn't been processed, no explanation as to why, just an apology. They said the account opening info would be in the post today. I asked when I could upgrade to Vantage (I could only open Classic online with the intention of upgrading when it was opened), and I was told that when it appears online it'll tell me when I can upgrade. Wish I'd 'phoned to open instead.

Were your second and third applications done quite soon after the first one was open? Just wondering if that was why they thought error?

Seems phone is the way to go with these things with them anyway. Thanks for update again.
