I am on my second dyson now and I bought the first one when they came out.
the fist one lasted seven years which given the amount of pets and small children and carpets I had at that time I thought was fantastic as previously a hoover had lasted 2 years.

the dyson I have now has been going strong for 8 years or there abouts . but I have one pet and less carpets and no small children.
love dyson would buy another when current one dies and never even had a fault on this one

First Dyson we bought lasted just over 5 years so we bought another but this time the smaller one with the roller ball and motorised brush, what a load of rubbish it turned out to be, the waste container was so small you had to empty it every time you used it and the suction when just using the hose was dreadful.

Cut a foot off the dyson cable and reattach the plug.

Good point, with most other vacs it's the opposite end that suffers:T
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you all I did a response lost and then my lost my internet connection.
Now back in action following some telephone instructions
Some people have had a good experience with Dyson but I am grateful for thos who had problems like myself
I am elderly and could not do any DIY so that is out
My Son in Law has brought an extra one they have not DYSON but she has had in the past problems and unlike me she bought another brand. Dyson on the telephone made me feel that I should be grateful that the cleaner had lasted so long!!
Once again and apologise for the delay

That was the initial impression as that is what you did. The thanks button gets used as an "I agree button" that was the point.

The post earlier about refitting the plug is sound advice, they take a hammering trying to stretch to the limit, most give at the cleaner end, but the Dydon units are better connected at that end.

I do think if you want the most reliable type you would have to revert, (and it is a backward step in technology and cleaning flexibility), to a bin type, Eward/Henry etc;);)

How often do you clean the pre-and post motor filters? 9 out of 10 times with Dysons, this is what kills the motors. If regularly cleaned they'll last for many years.
Going 'dead' is NOT a fault. The thermal cut-out is activated when the motor starts to overheat in order to stop it burning out. That's why you were advised to leave it for a few hours to cool down. Improve the air flow to the motor and it will be fine (assuming that it's not a cable or switch fault).

Thank you for sharing your experience with me. I think it is about 50-50 give or take
I am not sure if the advice on taking a foot off the cable is possible. All appliance now come with the plug fixed and my understanding right or wrong is that it would not be possible I did put a new fuse in and checked my fuse box to be sure that it was blown. I would not know how cut the cable but I could get my SIL to do it for me.
I am elderly and the ML forums are fantastic for helping me with problems or if going to buy something. I would like to thank all of you who do take the time to reply to me and others like me.

    Thanks to all

Even a fixed/moulded plu can have a broken wire do to flexing, simply cut it of and fit a standard plug, worth a shot before any real expense;)

Check the filters first, clean/replace if necessary, then shorten the flex as described above.
    Which model is it?

I am wondering if anyone has owned a Dyson

Had/have two and would buy them again!

I have an original Dyson and another that I have had for more years than I can remember.
The only issue with the original one is I can not easily get the wand back in the slot (something has been distorted and it does not go back with ease), other than that it works as good as when first bought. This lives upstairs and the second one (DC07) is as it was when new.
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.

OOPS I didn't know about the thank you button but I see it now. Normally what I do is just follow up with a response . for the help advice etc that people give.
Recently I had a printer with a problem and I wrote on this forum and sent a PM to someone who had sent me a PM
He thanked me and said it was good to get the feedback and know the results etc He stated that often people do not come back and let them know the outcome
Thank you for the advice about changing the plug. I will get my SIL or someone to do it for me to do it for me. I will wash the filter again today. Last washed about 3-4 months ago As you all are saying it makes sense to do as you all suggest
One never knows !! It may resolve the problem Will let you know the outcome,

    Sue
