Nearly died on the M4 this morning

Can't believe the stupidity of this.

Filter lane which filters off left on M4. Lorry driver had obviously not been paying attention, stayed in the left and then realised it was going down the sliproad.

So, he's stopped dead in the slip road, turned almost 90 sideways, crossed the zigzags and then attempted to get back onto the main carriageway (like a give way sign).

Of course, I saw him wondered what he was doing but then he pulls out 100 yards in front of me. Know I know stopping distance at 70mph is about that.... Crapped myself, but had to swerve into outside lane (luckily nothing coming) and then watched as cars behind me almost ploughed into the back of me.

Driver of lorry should lose his job for this. Nolan Transport was the company. I've emailed them....

One thing I can not stand is people doing deliberately dangerous and stupid things when driving. Make a mistake fair enough but to do someone and endanger someone elses life because you're lazy is not on.

Glad you are OK, Despite shaken up.

Had a similar experience also on the M4 (outside Reading) 12yrs ago and it bought several decisions I was making at the time into almost perfect clarity.

Gets on my baps that vehicles carry a "How's My Driving" slogan but bosses can't be bothered to react to complaints because it's just another overhead especially seeing as no-one was hurt. As above, glad you're ok.
  • Yeh. Contacted the company -Nolan Transport BTW.

All they said was did I get reg plate? No I didnt I was too busy trying not to get killed !!!!

Surely they know roughly where they're lorries are at a given time?

CCTV on the junction at all? Traffic Cam or the like. Wonder if someone might be able to identify it.

They have probably got some sort of tracker on the lorry though. They would certainyl have a good idea who should be in that area at that time based on the delivery logs though so a reg plate shouldn't be necessary.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

To be fair (on them for asking this) the driver is not going to 'fess up, is he? As far as he's concerned he's got away with it.
    Glad you're ok.

    Tachograph might give it away.
A sudden change in speed will show up, assuming he anchored on the slip road?

I assume that there will be a sudden change from 56mph down to nothing then back up to 56mph.

There is no doubt they'll have a rough idea who it is as most trucks now are on time and motion destinations from a centralised computer.

I've never understood people who try to get back onto the motorway from a slip road. It's utter madness. Most of them lead to a roundabout / junction anyway and those that don't.. well you'll get to one eventually lol. I've missed / taken loads of sliproads in the past and admittedly I used to panic until i realised that you just keep going and turn around somewhere. Simplez.

As the others have said, glad you're ok!

They'll just cover it up if they're like many logistics operators out there.

May be worth telling VOSA about what happened. This isn't the sort of incident they say to report under the following page but you never know, they may take an interest and most motorway junctions are covered by cameras...

P.S: Glad you're ok aside from being a bit shaken up.

Commercial drivers should have higher than average standards of driving (not that this says much) and, to be fair, most do.

Obviously, the company want the reg to make tracing the vehicle/driver easier but by checking each drivers manifest they must be able to figure out which particular vehicle this is likely to be. Let them know that if they are unable to give you confidence that the matter will be deal with in an appropriate manner then you will report it to both the Police and the Traffic Commissioner. As they need an Operator's License to run LGV's they will take very seriously the threat of trouble with the TC.
