Forget the kWh rates and standing charges, all that counts is the total annual cost derived from actual meter readings (never estimates). I'm with Neon Reef who only have one tariff, Aqua One.  They're not listed by the CEC (despite its claims to show all suppliers and tariffs) which is why I always suggest starting with Citizens Advice and 'Switch with Which?'.  Note that some sites get confused If you have an E7 meter because they will happily bill at single rate.

Don't forget that separate suppliers are often cheaper than dual fuel.
  • Thanks - I looked at Neon Reef and, using the 4200kWh figure in the article, I get £584, so still ~£50 more.
I do realise it's the total that matters, I just wondered if I'm missing something as even on the tarrifs with the same 22p standing charges I'm not seeing kWH rates anywhere near those in the article.
  • I have a full economy 7 system hot water tank and 3 storage heaters through a white meter with 2 readings.
Should I stick with the existing white meter, or get a smart meter installed?

No point in getting a smart meter except in the unlikely event that it's the only way to get a cheaper tariff.
  • There's also not reason not to get a Smart Meter. (Assuming your supplier does them for E7.)

My E7 meter has drifted in the 14 years since it was installed. I get cheap rate until 8.27am in the summer which is handy for sticking another wash on or doing the ironing early at cheap rate. I'm guessing with a smart meter that wouldn't happen.

It's probably quite legit because several areas have cheap rate E7 until 0730 GMT or even later.
Mine is 2230 - 0030 and 0230 - 0730 GMT so I can 'double dip' last thing at night and first thing in the morning (up to 0830 BST) if I'm not on a single rate tariff.

Just checked and I'm in a 23:00-7:00 area so I'm benefitting from the drift. Mine is a solid 7 hr block and the sticker on it says 0000-0700

My smart meter clock has drifted 4hrs slow. Fortunate I noticed or I would be heating my water at peak rate.
  • I read about 2 years ago that the British government is getting rid of the Economy 7 tariff in the next couple of years, is this correct?
