Thanks for that info John.
I suspect that the old meter was faulty given how their usage pattern changed so markedly once the new meter was put in place.
However, I suspect that it has worked in their favour by recording quite a bit of their day usage, which is when they use most electric, as night usage which would have been on a cheaper price per KWh and some of their night usage on the day tariff which was the more expensive price per KWh.
So I don't think it is something to go complaining to the energy company about. Though I will try and just double check that the Day reading is now actually the Day reading and not the night reading.
I will look at the flashing lights when I am next there and time the flashes.
i have asked them to start taking monthly readings on the first of the month and as they have just got an ipad I am going to get them to submit the readings via the energy companies app.
Finally, it does seem worth their while switching to a non Economy 7 tariff given the savings being shown on the Energy Saving Club.0 -
Not all utility companies will accept the combined readings on an economy 7 meter to provide readings for a standard (non-economy 7) tarriff. Npower do and they will also change the meter for free which then gives you more flexibility when choosing your next supplier.
The old style clock meters were probe to slippage in time so were a boon for most customers and apparently so for your parents. I suspect that is why the utility companies are keen to replace the meters.
Npower are not the best for customer service but when you have cause to complain they will make a financial payment to recompense you for being poorly served.0 -
I've just read here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/economy-7#meterchange that Scottish Power is one of the companies which will change a meter FREE if you move from E7 to standard tariff.
I asked about this only yesterday and Scottish Power told me it would cost me £50!!
I reported this over a year ago and yet the page STILL says that Scottish Power will change the meter free if moving from E7.

Is there such a thing as a electric switch that will run my power on E7 during the allotted hours, then switch to standard during the day time hours?:)0

That is how E7 works. During the low-rate hours, all electricity used is charged at the low rate.0 -

Not true for all properties.
Some E7 properties are wired so only storage heating and(usually) immersion heaters receive off-peak electricity for the 7 hours; all other electricity for sockets/cookers/lighting etc is charged at peak rate 24/7.
That used to be very common in older properties - particularly in Scotland - but on MSE there have been reports of this arrangement installed in modern flats.0 -

My house is wired with some circuits switched at E7 times only and the remainder are permanent live and charged at E7 peak and off-peak rates (two consumer units fitted) - best of both worlds.

Hi all
I've recently found out that i am on an economy 7 tariff which is totally undesirable to me.SSE are coming today to fit a new meter but i have had this meter since 2006.When I left british gas in 2008,they passed my details to my next supplier and this has gone on ever since.SSE inform that they have sent me a yearly statement with this info on but I do not remember receiving such letters, any suggestions?
Thx0 -
When you change suppliers the meter information doesn't come (directly) from your old supplier - there are companies in the middle that manage the meters.
As these companies don't bill you they don't know that your previous supplier was adding your reads together, they just pass on the information that you have an E7 meter to your new supplier.
Did you sign up to online/email billing? It is possible that SSE sent you an email rather than a letter.0 -
Thx for the reply, sse told me british gas passed on the info??? and no to ebilling
