  • Hi,

Just found out, this morning, that our E8 meter is set permanently on BST, so that means the Night currently stretches from 2200 to 0600. Whilst we get the expected 8 hours at 'cheap' rate, it seems an unusual time period that doesn't allow us to make the most efficient use of early morning showers etc.

Just wondered how common this timing setup was.

    Cheers all ....

We're on Standard Domestic with Scottish Hydro, running storage radiators in 2 upstairs bedrooms.

Only meters with a radio teleswitch adjust for BST. The majority of meters don't.

This will change following the Smart meter roll out.

An uncommon and totally worthless tariff. Yes you get one hour extra cheaper electricity than E7, but its worth - 'less' to you because unlike the E10 tariff you can not benefit from the extra hours heat before bedtime. All things being equal if the costs are the same as the E7 tariff you lose nothing but get an extra unnecessary hour. If however the night / day rate & other charges are higher than E7 you loose money.

Over the years we've lived in various parts of north and south Scotland, at present in Scottish Power region. We've always been on a "White Meter" giving 8 1/2 hours off-peak, during summer 2400 - 0830 and winter 2300 - 0730.

Never come across an E8 meter.

It's not an E8 meter, per se - just a meter that covers a Hydro tariff of 8 hours instead of the 'normal' 7 hours. Presumably because we live in a 'colder' climate !
  • Hi, I've just switched from EDF to EON (I have an Economy 7 meter).
Switch is in progress (started 3rd Nov-14)
I've just realized that Economy 7 is not that economic for me!

From your experience should I wait for the switch to complete and then ask EON to change the meter and move me to a different (hopefully cheaper) tariff?
Or shall I cancel the switching process and get the meter changed first?
Both EDF and EON are saying that they will switch the meter for free...

Btw, I have switched because the Cheap Energy Club comparison tool says I could save over £120 for the next 12 months by moving to one of the MSE BIG SWITCH EVENT tariffs!
Because only 20% of my Kwh consumption is on a Night rate I then thought to change meter as well.

    Thanks for your input.

IIRC, EON are one of the suppliers that will totalize the registers so that a meter change is not required. EDF will not totalize.

I would check with EON, but your best bet is probably to let the switch go through and then just totalize the registers.

Totalising is a requirement under RMR changes brought in this year. Any one not totalising is in breach of regulation.

I'm with EDF and I've been totalised for years.
  • OK, thanks guys. So I understand I won't need to change meter, but will I have to go through a new tariff change if I'm going to provide a totalised reading instaed of Day/Night readings? Because the new tariff I'm switching to I believe it's still an Economy 7 tariff...

I can't remember seeing an option when filling in the form.

    thanks

Yeah, just ring them up and explain you want to move to a single rate tariff.
