Wols Riverbank Tales 5: Recapitulation

I decided that as I had had to clean my flat from top to bottom when I moved in that I would leave it in the state that I found it:rotfl: My ex landlord was a snake - he didn't care about drug dealers or other pondlife. I have a new landlord who is wonderful but then she also gets on my nerves (it is mum). I have lovely people next door to me - because I have been ill the wife rang to see if I was alright and her husband has been round to see if I need any shopping doing. I have ventured out twice in the car to various supermarkets to get supplies and to liberally spread my germs around. Still feel poorly with a cotton wool head, dizziness, sore throat, catarrh and generally feeling as though I have been squashed by a steam roller. I can also fall asleep at the drop of a hat.0

Hi All
Just a quickie...I have been very busy preparing for the big storm and possible flooding that will occur sunday night/monday morning.
Despite some scaremongering in the press - this storm needs to be respected. I have been following the charts on a weather forum these last few days and it is no longer a "possible" event...it is a definite event and a serious one at that.
It WILL hit the UK. It WILL cause damage to property, fell trees and we will suffer disruption to travel and power outages. Anyone south of the M4 may have sustained winds up to 65mph with gusts of 80mph that currently will be at their worst in the South East during monday morning rush hour...so not good. Anyone west of the low pressure track ie north Wales/West Mids/NW and NE regions etc will get the torrential rain. This storm also may have a sting in its tail and as it moves into the north sea, there may be damaging gusts to Kent and the East side of the country up to EYorks.
Currently every region south of a central line running through England is on the highest amber warning from the MetOffice and it is expected that a red warning will be issued tomorrow morning for some areas including mine.
The biggest damage to property will come from flying debris such as roof tiles, roof felt, fence panels, trampolines, lightweight patio furniture and plant pots as well as falling branches/trees. It amazes me that many people don;t think this will aply to them and have done nothing to secure their gardens to protect not just their own but also their neighbours properties
I have taken down all my hanging baskets and secured them, stored anything that is lightweight enough to be picked up by the wind, secured my rubbish bins and have just come back from buying loads of rope to tie down the tarpaulins covering the outdoor piggie hutches tomorrow. All the pigs are indoors anyway but tomorrow night I shall be moving them away from the windows nearest the very large oak tree across the road . I have also emptied my water butts because both were already overflowing.
I still have a lot to do before I go to bed tomorrow night including increasing the height of the external flood barriers, organising Piggie palace to ensure valuable contents are safe if it floods including putting the BBQ in there, ensuring all windows/doors/loft hatch are firmly secured and finally ensuring all electrical-based chores such as dishwasher/ironing etc have been completed. All mobile phones etc are on charge and torches/wellies etc now placed in appropriate places. I myself will be sleeping in the back bedroom tomorrow night because two "at risk" tall trees if they fall, will land directly onto my front bedroom._pale_
Please everyone keep an eye on the Met office warnings website particularly before you go to bed tomorrow evening....and if you live in the South then think carefully about whether to go out on monday morning.
Above all, don;t panic, be prepared, be sensible and stay safe

Boil water and place it into flasks. It should keep for about 12 hours depending on the quality of your flasks.
Freeze water in plastic bottles (they can take it) and place into any spare space in your fridge and/or freezer. This will buy you a few hours extra coldness if the power goes.
They will also be potable if the water goes.

Keeping my fingers crossed that you manage to survive!
I am with you with trees. We are on a small plot in the bend in the road. Literally just the other side of the property line (2m away one side and 4 m away the other side, it is a really small plot lol), are two giant pohutakawa trees. They are the sort of tree that all the trunks come from one place a the bottom. Anyway I am sure one of them is going to come down in one of the storms as one of them is on the side of the hill, so I don't like storms over here either....I want a job that is less than an hour driving away from my house! Are you listening universe?

Just checked on the trees ... the only one that could possibly reach me is a big silver birch at the back, but the branches are so light and feathery if it got to me, I'm sure it wouldn't do any harm. Its glorious sun at the moment, so I'm going to have a cuppa tea and make the rounds to make sure everything's safe in the garden.
Thanks for the linkie and the update, Wol. Positive vibes, peeps.2023: the year I get to buy a car0
