As it is a montage surely there are photos of other pals in it. Why not suggest to one of the folks who appear lots that it just wont go in your house and perhaps they might like it in theirs.

Not a bad idea, but there are quite a few with just me in :-(. This in itself is another reason I don't want it up, looks a bit narcissistic. Maybe I'll offer it to the next stalker I have ;-)

At the end of the day OP you need to do what you feel is most appropriate, I know it's an awful feeling when you get a gift you don't particularly like (and I'm sure most of us have been there) hopefully you can find a solution. It sounds like you have very kind and thoughtful friends though, that in itself is priceless x

Thanks for your understanding. You're right, they are ace mates.

Have emailed the company to see if there's anything they'll do. Unlikely I realise, but they do have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, so worth a shot!

Would you come back and let us know what the outcome is?

I appreciate what you're saying, but I'm not prepared to be that dishonest with people I've known for so long or see so regularly. I haven't said as bluntly that I didn't like it, but did say to one friend that it was a bit big for the flat and she agreed and said that it might be possible to have it changed. She also said that she would rather I had it changed than live with something I wasn't happy with.

Saying you like it, even if you don't, is a white lie. And in such situations is certainly a much better option than telling the gift giver you don't like the gift they've probably not just spent a lot of money on, but time also.

If they had bought you a garment of clothing or something that you know could be changed easily then it wouldn't be so bad. But in this case, it's abundantly clear due to the nature of the gift an exchange or refund is something you simply wouldn't be able to get, making it frankly quite a selfish act in telling them you don't like it.

In fact, frankly, saying you don't like it is a very selfish approach.

As I said earlier, I didn't say I didn't like it all, I said it was too big for the flat. They will realise that I don't like it when they see it isn't in the flat, and then be more upset that I wasn't honest, which is in my opinion, worse.

You said more than you didn't like it!
I understand what people are saying about not upsetting friends, but can assure they would rather me say something than live with something I hate.

Yes, to an anonymous forum, not to my friends!

Pretty terrible thing to say about a gift from your friends, and even worse to say it behind their backs :(
