Valli glad you're on the mend
roundtuit has someone who has recently become a 'recovering hoarder' (nothing on the scale that is on the hoarder programmes but I was on a slippery slope and could have easily been like that within a couple of years ) I found great support on the hoarding thread. It helped me address the reasons for keeping 'stuff', some of it was down to not knowing what to do with some of the 'stuff', some of it was 'it's worth something' (was it heck! I've never been able to afford expensive items, I was putting far too much value on some 'stuff'), some of it was 'I might need it' (Justin Case). But the crux of it for me was accepting my life as it is now, not how I thought/wanted it to be. It's involved letting go of emotional ties to 'stuff' as well as letting go of chunks of my past that were holding me back.
It has been a very liberating & positive experience for me - it makes flying so much easier! I also have saved a lot of money as I'm not buying things for the sake of buying them (trying to fill an emotional hole).

Thanks
re the Hoarding - my issue was 'it's worth something' or 'it was a gift' and after my lightbulb moment I flung no end of stuff. What I have now. ornament wise, is what I like. DD has announced that she will fling most of it - I have advised her to use e bay to get rid:rotfl:
the most precious (to me) things I have are quite small, really, one is my 'antique' porcelain boy-on-a-chair. I woudl LOVE to take it to an antiques show because then the reason his shoes and other bits are pearly pink can be recorded for posterity. my Great Aunt, who had custody of him before me (he was promised to me as a child) decided they needed a repain, so she did it with nail polish! If there ever was any value in him that act will have scuppered it but a nice family fokelore story! Other thing is a sovereign balance by Grandad gave me - neither my mum(his only child) or his wife even knew he had it - mind you Grandma was an expert flinger...
Trouble with clutter is it owns you - declutter, keep what you like and the balance is restored and you own it! Definitley liberating! One day I WILL empty the attic (need stairs/steps first;))
Don't know if you're arounf IONAFAN - but I have made the cake; it's baking now. Used 150g ground almonds in meringue layer, because that was the pack size and Morries didn't have ground hazelnuts; Aldi's way past mummyoffives and I'm not going over there anytime soon. Used rhubarb straight from the garden and ground ginger because I forgot crystallised or syrup and I was exhausted, shopping. All praise to the checkout girl who packed for me - her mum would be very proud!;)Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

Aaah yes! If something was a gift I couldn't get rid of it even if I didn't like it. I have managed to get rid of a lot of gifts to the CS now though*
*except an necklace and earring set brought by a relative who lives overseas when they came to visit earlier this year. I'd love to donate them to the CS but it would have to be taken to a non-local cs as my Dad's wife shops in local CS and they are easy to identify!0 -

deco - you nearly made me cry ( in a good way - relieved to know I'm not alone): like you I can see that slippery slope  and it's frightening. I'm going to have a look at the hoarding thread when I finish this post...sounds like it could help me too - although I'm not sure how I'll like unearthing that 'hole'!
Since my last post I've:
rinsed and recycled 10 cola cans
recycled an empty biscuit tin brought home from Uni by DS last weekend ?!?
cleaned the worst of the gunk from the kitchen sink - at least you can tell it's stainless :rotfl:steel now
washed a bowlful of pots/cutlery
put kitchen bin out and hung a new one ( I reuse carrier bags for this)
Mrs Starling is going nuts at me as she is used to having the back yard to herself and the brood she's rearing in the outhouse roof; how very dare I keep popping out to the bins!
I'm going to have a look for the aforementioned hoarding thread now .....
Back later xxx

Which you caould have filled with Twinks (or similar) for him to take back - Kudos to you for 'ignoring' the 'hint' :rotfl:Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

Am guessing a Twink is some sort of biscuit? Please 'scuse my ignorance.
ooooooh... it never occurred to me that I could do that :rotfl:but I don't feel bad as his step-mum always sends over enough food parcels to feed a faculty for him to take back.:money:

roundtuit don't worry about the 'hole' yet. I didn't start dehoarding thinking about why I was doing it. I just knew I had to do something as I was feeling overwhelmed, unable to relax in my own home.
When I was part way through did I question why I was doing it (hoarding that is). I was ready for the change though as I couldn't carry on how I was.

Good to know you're far enough on the road to recovery to start baking, Valli! I'm sure the cake will taste good, especially with rhubarb straight out of the garden and the ground almonds.
I went shopping today and came back exhausted and aching, but an hour's sleep after lunch has put me right again.
Now, what have I still got to do? Some more things have appeared on the list during the day
