Why do couples who have been together years split up?

I was with my ex for 3 1/2 years. On the surface we were a stable, happy couple. But i really hid a lot of things from friends and family. When we split everyone was surprised, but i'd been expecting it for a while.
In my life i was shocked when my dad and first stepmum split up. They'd been together 10 years and i'd grown up with her being part of my life. Then they got married, and divorced a year or so after. I think its true what others have said that you don't know what's going on behind closed doors.This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
