I dont call that odd. If you see in the evening you only have say 7 slices you would think "ah good enough for breakfast and lunches, don't need to pop down the shop", and in the morning there arent enough for toast, then of course you're gonna notice.

I would be concerned about someone eating in the night as well, especially if I had young people/teenagers in the house, the last thing I would want would be for someone in my care to have an eating disorder or start developing an unhealthy attitude to food.

Tbh, I think a hidden camera is a better idea than just leaving it and hoping it sorts its self out (as some people on this thread seem to suggest), just because you find out who it is doesn't mean you have to confront them, it just gives you information and helps you make a decision with how to deal with it. OP, don't let people guilt you into thinking you would create an unhappy unstable atmosphere by using a camera, only you know your family and only you can judge the situation.

Just because a camera is hidden, doesn't mean it won't be found. Result - trust issues. I'd rather wait to see if it all comes out in the wash than risk damaging the relationships with my family.

I'm wondering why you haven't mentioned that you have an eating disorder yourself but are happy to mention allergies. Sorry, I'm a serial lurker on the OS menu thread and fellow ex-sufferer myself with a mother who also had major food issues, so it stands out and I do think it's relevant to the way you are viewing this.

i don't see what my eating problems has to do with this tho....and my food allergies/intolerances led to my eating disorder (actually its not a disorder as assessed by an eating disorder clinic, i just have "issues")

In my opinion, if food is going missing and everyone is denying it, someone is lying (not a great believer in sleepwalking!) so I see no problem with setting up a secret camera, I'd probably do the same in a similar situation to prove who was doing it and to stop them lying. Yes, some of you think its unfair to spy on your family, but I agree its unfair that a family member may be stealing and lying about it.

Some of my friends have suffered with eating disorders relating to binge eating. They feel SO ashamed of it and so bad about themselves.

Of course lying isn't right, but it's important to look at why they are lying? Is it shame? Is it embarrassment? There's usually a reason for people's behaviour.

Because I think placing a camera in the house is an extreme reaction that might be brought on by your issues surrounding food.

We would regularly have "foodgate" in our house. We all stole food, including my father, simply because my mother controlled every morsel that went into our mouths.

I understand this might not be the case with you but it just seemed odd that you mentioned the allergies but not the eating disorder when in other posts I have seen you mention the eating disorder but not the allergies.

i don't think this has anything to do with my issues with food, i'm just fed up with expecting food to be there and it not be. I work out our food budget and if people are eating food in the night it dips into that, if someone eats all the sausage rolls in the night, then the packed lunch it was meant to go into the next day is going to look a little empty!

i don't control what they eat, yes i cook all the main meals but they eat well pretty much all the time, they can help themselves whenever.

yes i think i would notice if my husband was eating alot of bread as i know how bad he reacts if he has a tiny bit of gluten.
The concern with my daughter is that if she is sleep eating what if she eats something not suitable...i read about sleep eaters eating raw sausages and all sorts

I understand the concern about the health issues you've highlighted above. However, I'd still take the approach of watching and waiting...not with a camera!

How long has this been going on?

My husband is pretty adamant it isn't him...hes a coeliac so i think we'd know if it was him as most of the food that goes missing has gluten in. I'm pretty sure its not me, my son couldn't reach alot of the stuff so it comes down to my daughter, but she denies it too, although she does have history of sleep walking so wondering whether it is an escalation of this.

So to get to the point i've bought a mini secret camera and am trying to work out the best way to hide. If anyone has any good ideas, that'd be great :)

Without knowing the layout of your kitchen it's a bit hard to say. On top of the cupboards, looking down, perhaps?

But if you already kind of know who it is, what are you going to do once you've got film footage of her? Confront her with it?

If she's sleepwalking she might get a bit upset, especially if she sleepwalks like my aunt used to, without any clothes on

How is it gonna 'come out in the wash' when noone will admit to taking the food and it happens at night when everyone is in bed??

I don't mean to talk for the OP but eating disorders and issue with food are very personal. Sure, OP may have discussed it in the past but maybe they dont want to today. This question has already been asked in the thread, if the OP felt it was relevant or wanted to discuss it they would, surely.

I can understand that you want to get to the bottom of this, both to address the missing food problem, and to see if anyone has a health issue that you need to address. But a secret camera?

Secret cameras, when they are not being used for the 'candid camera' type of TV show, are associated with spying, voyeurism, and deep suspicion. Where I work, we have CCTV cameras watching all the tills, public spaces, vulnerable areas etc, but none of them is secret. We have had plenty of suspicions about petty theft, but to my knowledge we have never used a secret camera to catch someone out. It would have a huge negative impact on employer/employee relations, so it isn't done. And you want to do this to your family?

If I found a member of my family was using a secret camera to check what I was doing, I would never speak to them, or trust them, ever again.

There has to be a better way.
