Are we seriously seeing a school investigate a firearm incident. This is a serious incident that should be handled by a professional organization that have the necessary knowledge, expertise and tools.

People have been shot dead by BB guns. Please don't settle without involving the police.

As a matter of interest how many people have been killed by a BB gun in the UK in the last 10 years firing a plastic pellet?

I ask as a genuine matter of interest and not, if it comes across that way, as an attempt to downplay the seriousness of what happened.

A quick google suggests there have been a number of BB gun deaths, both children and adults.

One woman died in April, there are a few reports of kids dying this year too.

In the UK with a plastic pellet?

I couldn't find any that weren't actually air rifles and with a metal pellet.

I was genuinely interested in if plastic bb's were equally dangerous.

I've read that a lot of airsoft groups use them for "skirmishing". This appears to involve safety kit but this is people actually shooting other people for "fun". I'm curious to know how may people have really died from plastic bb's.

Again i re-iterate i'm not trying to downplay what happened i just want to understand the differences.

    1. There is relatively little chance that a BB pellet could kill. However, there is every chance that it could maim. It takes very little to blind someone.

    2. I personally find the "airsoft" community rather sad, at least it is relatively regulated and done in dedicated locations with - I believe - eye protection.

    3. The real underlying issue is that if a mamber of the public calls 999 and reports a youth with a firearm, this ratchets it up to a different level. There are recorded instances of people who were not carrying firearms - although the plod thought they were - who have been shot and killed.

Anyway, the thread is drifting. Facts as reported: one youth with a BB gun fired it and another youth was hit in the face. Should the Police be called? Without question. Next time it could be one of my kids, one of yours, or one of us.

OI! That's my son you're calling sad. :rotfl:

I hate it. But yes, it's well regulated AFAICS, and they do wear eye protection.

(although when DS1 asked DS2 where the 'armoury' was at Uni, it transpired that it was a locked cupboard in one of the public areas in the Students Union Building. I had visions of something a little more private and secure!)

No, I didn't specifically look for the uk, sorry, just bb gun deaths generally. :o

I did find one article that said a plastic pellet can do as much damage as any other depending on how fast it fires. Perhaps most BB guns don't fire at the kind of speed they were referring to though.

Edit: Well hasn't this thread been an education. I thought a BB gun was a BB gun but it's not as simple, there are apparently different types that all come under the BB gun heading, so ignore my last post. :)

And for those of us who are environmentally aware, you can get biodegradable pellets. :D

A group of 13yo girls teasing a group of 13yo boys has become racially motivated bullying and OP's daughter is the baddie, not the boy who shot a BB gun at her? Incredible.

This whole thread really has got out of hand with some people's overactive imagination. It's no wonder kids today are kept indoors playing video games.

You've hit the nail on the head :T

    Oops!

I'll qualify that opinion (and let's face it, we are all just expressing opinions here) - young lads having fun running round a field and shooting each other under controlled conditions - fair enough. What I find rather creepy is the middle aged men who spend a fortune on all the "correct" kit and post pictures on FB of themselves doing it. Yes, we all need a hobby, but if you want to wear body armour and shoot at people, the Army will let you do it for free. And for real :)

Like I said - just an opinion and absolutely no offence meant!

To the absurd amount of people accusing the OP's daughter of being a racist bully - have you not taken into consideration her audience? OP said of the group of girls she made the "terrorist" statement to, one was mixed race (afro-caribbean/white) and another afro-caribbean. These are her friends and I highly doubt she would want to offend them. Therefore I can only surmise that the "terrorist" comment was due to the fact she was being faced with a yob yielding a BB gun - nothing to do with the colour of his skin.

Would you all be defending him if he'd blinded her, or stabbed her?

    Ridiculous.

:rotfl: and no offence taken. to be fair, when I've seen him in a group, they've all been teens / early 20s as far as one can tell under the camouflage gear. Definitely mostly chaps, although there were a couple of girls in his 'group'.

If he poses on FB, I'd be astonished.
