Many hotels do have adapted facilities for the elderly and disabled (it is after all a big market) but they need to plan for this in advance, not just turn up at a hotel and expect them to accommodate their needs and demand compensation.
I'm afraid this is the case. It's the main reason why DH and I always travel independently - the few occasions when we've travelled in a group have usually been disastrous. I could write books on it. We prefer small B&Bs rather than hotels - you get much more personal service, but you do have to specify beforehand what your needs are.
It's possible to lose weight and not do much exercise. Or, for joint problems try aqua-aerobics. Women in their 80s and much, much larger than your Mum are doing it where I go.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Must admit though I've never understood women's clothes sizes,
is it 22 in feet or metres?
To clarify for Bob the Saver: Women's dress size 22 is 50" hips and 47" bust. It goes up 2" for each size.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Why do people like you always make fun of anyone who may be entitled to claim compensation? I bet you'd be quick enough to make a claim if you suffered injury or loss.0 -
But no-one had suffered an injury or a loss. What grounds would you have to be entitled to conpensation? There is a shower there, and it sounds like it is just the mum that can't use it, the dad can, so it can't be THAT small surely?
A lot of countries just don't have the same obesity problems as the UK or USA, so it doesn't occur to them. Unless size was specified (of the rooms) I really don't see how you could have a case.
Not sayin that it isn't worth speaking nicely to the hotel about the inconvenience... I have got free upgrades by doing that, but never expected or demanded compensation, as I have no right to it!:T0 -
Luckily the single room my aunt is is is big enough, so mum has had a shower, but can anyone help as to where we stand on this? Does she have any rights, do the hotel have to provide a bathroom she can get into (she's a size 22, so big, but not colossal).
Quite honestly, I don't think the word 'rights' comes into it. The hotel can only provide what it has got.
I'm a bit amazed that Mum phoned home and you - in the UK - have been drafted in to help sort out this problem, which is in another country, in a holiday destination, and a phone call to the holiday provider/hotel management/airline representative might have been the better way to go?Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

they didn't phone me, i received a text with the hotels direct number. they only have a pay as you go mobile so to save them credit i called them in their room. i have skype it's about 2p a minute!
i then called the easyjet emergency number for them, and spoke on their behalf. in fact it was about 3 calls over the day to easyjet, which would have used up a lot of credit
they had already talked to the hotel manager, so took the next step, as detailed on their holiday confirmation.
quite textbook i'd say.0 -

Because Zacksmum, I am sick of folk trying to get something for nothing, claiming for fake injuries or hurt feelings, people like them encourage the health and safety brigade to curtail everyones freedoms and their selfish actions have directly put the cost of almost everything up for everyone else.0 -

I agree with you.
However, there is a world of difference in expecting to have a relaxing holiday without inconvenience, that you have paid for, and not getting it.
IMO a 10inch gap would be uncomfortable to negotiate for a good many people.0 -
can you post a picture of this gap it sounds terrible, I can't quite picture it from your posts, PM me if you would ratherBlackpool_Saver is female, and does not live in Blackpool0

But the OP's mum is having to pop next door into her sisters room for a shower. She hasn't suffered any injury or loss.
I don't condone all the fun poked at the OP's mum because of her size but this really is a storm in a teacup.0
