I am so surprised at all these responses. I got married a month ago and offhand I can think of at least three women who wore cream/ivory to my wedding (and one of them was lacy). I really could not have cared less and certainly didn't worry about them being mistaken for the bride...after all, I had a big train and a veil! My best friend also recently wore white to a wedding and the bride didn't mind....in fact, the bride helped her choose the dress!0

I expect your family and friends know you well enough to realise you couldn't have cared less.
Ilovecupcakes doesn't know the bride or what she's wearing. Not all brides have a train and veil. It would be best to err on the side of caution rather than upset her BF's sister the first time they meet.0 -

I would never think anything mean about someone in a cream dress at a wedding, I'm sure most of us wouldn't. However, even some otherwise lovely rational women get a bit nutty around their weddings or their daughter's weddings.
I think a lot of the advice here is because this is the first time the OP is meeting her 'in laws' and in that situation its generally better not to take too many risks! She'll be hoping this is the start of a good, long term relationship with the bride and other guests so best to play it safe!0 -
I'd buy it and wear it!
If anyone has a problem with it, it says more about them than you.
I couldn't have give a fig if someone wore white or ivory to my wedding, it was blatantly obvious I was the bride.
Infact thinking back, I can't remember what most guests wore, I was just pleased they came to share our day.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
I've worn cream top and trousers to a wedding but wouldn't wear a cream dress unless pattered with another colour. Tbh I would have been a bit miffed if someone turned up at my wedding in a cream/white dress - wouldn't said but would probably have thought it was a little cheeky. You can probably get away with it aslong as its nothing like the brides dress but if you don't know her I wouldn't risk it.0

In probably every other situation I'd agree you should wear what you want and if someone doesn't like it, tough. That's not the case with a wedding though, I'm surprised anyone would wear something knowing it was possible it would upset the bride!
I think you're making the right decision by choosing another dress

I think your Mum's entirely right - a lot of brides wouldn't mind, but some would, and even those who don't mind could well have other guests who think it's rude.
I'd assume, for a wedding, unless told otherwise, no cream, white, black or very dark grey / navy, no massively short skirts or a neckline that might have someone's eye out. More "elegant" than "sex bomb", really....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I can't find a dress I like for a wedding next month so have ended up with a purple and black top and black trousers and will prob feel frumpy in them. I say where what you feel comfy able in. I want to wear cropped leggings but I'm getting varying opinions on thatHave a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0

Well, it does depend on how reasonable the bride's demands are!
There've been some cracking threads on here about wacky dress codes and insane expectations. Here's a good one:
