Updated Cheap Car Insurance guide - new system

  • Buy a car that the current UW will insure you on if you want your current policy to continue.

Ask them for the reason, is it a lack of security? Your age? The value of the car/cover requested?
  • New car is virtually identical as one that was written off.

Wondering if it might be something to do with the fact that, in effect, there is no car to "replace" as claim settled. In that case, technically, there is no insurance in force so can they charge me to cancel?

I'm sorry but Im so sceptical about anything purporting to be cheap(er) car insurance.
The MOJ is going through a consultation period at the moment to stop personal injury claims going through below £5000 in an attempt to stop whiplash and fraud but it's a complete lie. This will disempower 1000's of legitimate cases being heard.
There is a Twitter a campaign with the hashtag #FeedingFatCats.

The BBC produced a report on the rising car insurance premiums - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-38002662

They've doubled since 2013 but the number of reported accidents has dropped. It's nothing to do with Brexit. The insurance companies would all have us believe it's becuase of fraud. It's a lie. Nothing but another attack on working class by the Tories. See this law firm online they claim to be fighting claim management companies or ambulance chases, while attacking Liz Truss at the Justice Ministry: https://www.phc-law.com/phc-blog/compensation-reform-big-insurance-lie/

So if anyone knows of a sure fire way to get cheaper car insurance please share because we're all being scammed and if the government gets it's way it will be an appalling betrayal.
  • Just had an LV= renewal quote by post for £484, did the LV= online quote and it came out at £421. That's £7 more than 2 years ago, and £27 less than a year ago. Gave them a call and they renewed at the £421 price. Same routine every year for the last 10 years (except 2016 when the online and postal quotes were within pennies). I've always had superb service from LV= over the years so I'm happy to stay with them. But I do wish an insurance company somewhere would play fair with renewals.

I keep seeing the word "cheap". There's a difference between cheap insurance and best value insurance and the comparison sites tend to focus on the former rather than the latter. Write down exactly what you want in terms of cover and service, including excesses, quality of customer service, flexibility if you change cars or drivers, etc. and compare more than just the price on a comparison site. "Cheap" very often means compromising on one or more of those requirements. But do use the comparison sites to haggle with the insurer that is your first choice in all other respects.
  • Had to share this with you, I saved a massive £2823.00 by shopping round for car insurance; I had a multi car policy with Admiral for my car & my son's car. The renewal notice came though detailing my premium at £450.00 & my sons at £4123.05..! Well, after we picked ourselves up off the floor, went straight online and compare quotes on "Compare the Market" where "Tesco car Insurance" came out best for us both saving a whopping (Martins favorite word) £2823.00 for same cover! Saved £150.00 on mine & £2673.00 on my son's, only difference is we're insured separately instead of multi car..., Faaaanaaastic!! :j

Love the show, keep up the good work everyone xx

Well this is unusual - not only is my renewal cheaper than last year, but also cheaper than any of the comparison sites!

Just hope greed won't bite me on the backside - I called to see if they can do even better now that I keep the car on a drive overnight instead of the road, but without anything to negotiate with. Was told the rates have actually gone up, but they'd honour the existing renewal quote if I renew there and then.

Stupidly I said I'd look around and they'd call me next week. I can only find *more expensive* quotes! Got a feeling when they call next week and I have nothing to negotiate with, they'll just bump up the price.

Sometimes perhaps it's best if you DO renew automatically.

Edit: called them back to bite their hand off for the original renewal price here and now, which they did. Whew!

Is there a comparison site to look at car insurances which accepts NCB from another vehicle?

Well my renewal came through at £477.52 for fully comp, business with husband as a named driver, 9 years NCD.
Rang them and got a reduction to £379.31.

Went through TopCashBack (£24.70 cash back) and GoCompare to Admiral for £183.40.
    Added other car.

Total paid: £301.06 (including personal accident insurance as neither of us have income protection insurance).

    Happy me.
  • I am taking the car (and family) for a long summer break in France, so have just phoned direct line to organise foreign use extension. Their online blurb says "we can give you a maximum of 90 days Foreign Use Extension on your Comprehensive or Third Party Fire & Theft Policy for a small charge." The 'small charge in my case is £174, on an annual policy that is less than £300. In other words, they are charging me the equivalent of 7 months premium for a trip of 51 days. I'm not sure what they classify as a 'small charge' in the ivory tower at direct line, but that is scandalous. As a comparison, I was with Aviva a couple of years ago when I last did this, and their small charge was £29.50 for up to 90 days. Beware, it seems direct line will rip you off if you're planning on taking your car abroad any time soon!
